How can I get date of manufacture of my 87 S4?
 

I'm trying to replace the missing perforated door jamb sticker and the paint code sticker on my 87 S4. I've found someone who will make them up for me (Thanks Rob Edwards) but they need the date of manufacture (month/year) of the car to reproduce the perforated sticker. Since the original perforated sticker is gone, I'm not sure where I would get that information. Would it come up if I searched the VIN ? Thanks

On my Australian delivered car there is a metal plate pop riveted just below the headlight bar to the right of the hood lock. Not sure if it was just compliance here. Vin search I would have thought given you that detail.

^^ That was only on ROW cars, it is absent from all 928s sent to North America.

See if there is a masking tape piece with a handwritten date on it underneath the glove box - on early cars, the build date is written on a piece of tape and stuck there. Don't know if later cars have this (queing Jim D). If no joy, just get a COA from Porsche. Should get one anyway, as part of the file and car history.

Never mind - I just checked Jim's website - the tape marking under the glove box is a production number, not a build date. Get the COA instead.

Give a call to your Porsche dealer.
With the VIN, they should be able to give you the invoice date.

Mixed reviews on the CoA. It seems like a crap shoot. More than one review has said they are not accurate, they promise you nothing in return for $110. and they take their time. Is there somewhere I can get the start VIN and the final VIN of each model year run? I can just guess where my VIN would be in the production run. It doesn't have to perfect as it's only for a reproduction perforated sticker to replace the missing one.

I ordered a VIN Sticker from Porsche 3 times and 3 times they got it wrong on the manufacture date. I finally used the 2nd sticker because they ran out off the correct sticker & sent the GTS style VIN sticker. I kept the old door jamb with the original VIN sticker so I could also get the paint code sticker correct

I wasn't using Porsche. I was using a a site recommended by Bob Edwards, Car-bone.pl . They offer quite a few Porsche "original" stickers. I emailed them and they emailed me back going out of their way to try provide what I needed. They reproduce the perforated jamb sticker with your VIN and date of manufacture. They also make replacement paint code stickers as well as many others.

I won't pay for a COA because Porsche couldn't even get the sticker correct. Makes me doubt any info they provide about a 30 year old car. I did wonder how people sell number matching 928's as for a long time there was no documentation about engine or transmission serial numbers.

I went to the local Porsche dealer parts guy for info on my 88 S4. He was able to find build date, paint and interior codes, option list, engine number, and trans number. It took some effort on his part but he was willing to help. YMMV depending on the guy behind your parts counter.
