When green wire goes bad, how does it run?
My83 suddenly runs like total ****. Just started one afternoon, and Ive parked it since.
All 8 cylinders fire, and they all fire the same "really ****ty"...at WOT doesnt get out of its own way. INtake refresh last May, all new injectors as well. |
Sounds like a bad green wire. They either run like dog sh*t or don't run at all. If it isn't bright green, replace it.
Wouldn't hurt to replace the cap and rotor at the same time. |
You know the drill. You checked for spark. If it's a strong spark and timing is OK, look elsewhere. Next step, at least in my protocol, is a casual fuel pressure and delivery test.

I had a random misfire above 4k in my 79 that was from a failing green wire.
|
ya...theres no misfire. I havent checked for oil/corrosion at the coil, and cap/rotor are new last spring.
Runs like an old truck that huffs and puffs, but wont really go anywhere. Will catch video for sound this eve. |
Check your 14 pin connector by the jump post for looseness and corroded connections...
|
You could check out the ground strap from the battery to the chassis, strip back the black sheathing.., and the earth strap, from the engine to chassis ?

The Stepson was running the same way. No green wire on the Stepson, but it happened suddenly, like yours. I also had a warm start issue and thought it was 30 year old injectors leaking fuel pressure into the cylinders. Turns out, it was the brake booster on its way out. Leaking vacuum means the FPR and the dampeners don't work right, and also the vacuum advance on the distributor doesn't work right either. YMMV.

Don't just look at the ground straps.. Actually take them right off.. I have found that the bolts and nuts themselves have hidden corrosion inside the bolt holes and nut threads... Look very closely.. Or just replace them to be safe it is cheap insurance...they really don't cost very much for new..

All great things. I havent been on this project in months, and hope to get to it in a few weeks.
