Extra eyes on tank

Can someone please lay eyes on the pics below and reply if they anything amiss with my gas tank?

I understand it is a very tight fit, but I still feel like there is a lot of pressure on the tank from the cradle and I think this is what cracked the tank the first time.

the rear support on the drivers side looks like it is not properly aligned.

no bolts are tight, and the bolt for the front drivers side is not even in yet.

thanks

This was not my favourite moment on my 86! I think you need to make sure the filler neck and fuel level sender access are aligned correctly. The first and last photos show the alignment is out slightly. From the photos I think the tank needs to be raised slightly at the rear and the filler neck rotated toward the rear of the car. I would try loosening off the cradle bolts or even removing some to wriggle it into the right position and then bolt it back up. I think I ended up doing it twice to get it right and I agree I wouldn't put too much pressure on it but obviously it needs to be a snug fit and not move in the cradle.

Scott, just put the tank back in my 90GT this past weekend. There is a hose that connects at tank then threads thru a hole in body then connects to a fitting on neck that runs to the expansion tank. Make sure the hose is clear of the tank, when I first installed my tank that hose was caught under the rears right corner of the tank and kept it from going all the way up. It's #12 in PET diagram with fuel tank. I dropped the tank moved the hose and the tank went right up.

Scott - Almost certainly the vent pipe mention by jetson8859. I just put mine in last weekend. It’s a little tricky holding the tank while trying to thread the pipe through the small hole.

And make sure that the cradle has its high-density foam intact wherever it touches the tank.

Thanks all -

wrestled with it more tonight. The line from the tank through the fender wall seems to be free and clear. I did find that the cradle itself was bent on the bottom ‘cup’ that supports the tank. I straightened that back out so it’s cup shape matches the cup at the bottom of the tank.

so no difference in mounting. The arms of the cradle are still in the same spots and the tank appears to be evenly inside the cut out area in the trunk floor that it slips up into.

the biggest issue is the arm on the front drivers side. See the pics. It is a good 3” away from the hole where it screws into the body. So I put the jack up to hold the cradle up enough to start the bolt.

tightened it a bit and the tank repair cracked a bit - not sure how bad yet. But look how much is left to go to tighten that screw - at least another inch and there is already insane pressure on the bottom of the tank.

any more ideas?

thank you all!https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...ac3af33cf.jpeg

Lots of pressure on this corner.

Still an inch or so to tighten this bolt. All others are started but not tight at this point.

I have a gas tank if you opt replace instead of repair.

Kevin -

Thanks - I may be taking you up on that. I'll send you a PM.
