It's pretty strange actually. But in this case, it created closure to something that normally would've taken professional help.

WOW...great car chase story! Glad to hear you found and purchased an almost exact replica! Similar car chase story hit the news here in Canada this week...this one had a very happy ending:

Crazy to think she was able to track down the exact 2006 Mustang when you consider of the number that were produced!!

^Wow, I can't even imagine trying to track down a red mustang, must be one of half a million.

As soon as the car gets here, seats are coming out. One of the guys that owes me for a past trade reupholsters Porsche seats, so I am going to get the front seats redone with the correct blue piping, and I'll get new leather on there to make it look like new. Can't wait.

Question for the experts on the wheels: The car at Mohr has the coating chipped on the wheels. Dad's car had the wheels polished to high gloss, but what is the standard coating on these?

I believe the standard finish would have been anodized.

OK, so when people high polish them, do they strip off the anodizing and polish the aluminum directly? or ??

That is my understanding. Google "removing anodizing" to get some ideas of the process.

I got a set that was already polished, so I didn't go through the process.

Mine are bare aluminum (it's really soft), and I go over them during the winter when the car is parked. Just Mother's metal polish and a polishing wheel on an electric drill. A coat of wax (heavy and reapplied every time I wash it) helps.
They aren't perfect, but I like them.

Ok cool, thanks Joe. I'm trying to keep the car "as delivered" in this case which is weird for me because i do not own a *single* stock car. However, dad's car had the wheels highly polished, which I am not sure I really dig either. I guess I'll just wait to see what it looks like in person.

if "As delivered" they need to be anodized which can be redone locally. To polish you do need to strip the anodizing

If you want to go the highly polished option I have a set of chrome wheels that are correct for your car that I will be getting rid of soon...all four are in this condition. They came off of a 1988 S4 and were original to the car.

Great story with an even greater ending!

Congratulations on your new purchase.

Very nice car with low miles too.

Even if it is not your Dad's car, I'm sure you'll love it as this one will be your car.
And just like the car that started it all! Just like your Dad's car...

Knowing where the "original" one is is so cool.
And also knowing that it is in very good hand is even cooler!

I'm just like the owner of your Dad's car right now.
When I bought it 13 years ago, the PO and I were sitting in the car before I left and he told me to take good care of his baby.
He said that the car had brought him a lot in his life and wish it will do the same for me.
I said not to worry and told him I was realizing a long time dream that day buying his 928. Something I was waiting since a long time.

I have met him few times since. To say Hi and to show him what I did on the car.
He was very happy and told me many times that he could not have found a better owner to take good care of his baby.

He called me last summer and asked me if by any chance the Cobalt would not be for sale.
I said I was sorry but the car was staying here. And will be for a while...
He said that he understood and, again, that he was very happy that he sold it to me in 2005.

Right after he sold me the car in 2005, he bought a '93 GTS. But I think he will never forget his first 928.

Have fun with your new car and I'm sure you'll think a lot about the good old days with your Dad driving it!

Exactly, Bertrand. You hit the nail on the head.

What will be even more hilarious is that I have intentionally not really told him anything about all this. I phoned him the other day and asked him about the blue car and he was like "why do you ask?" , i deflected it as reminiscing. I didn't tell him I was looking for it because I didn't know I could find it or not.

My plan is to get the car, spruce it up a bit, and then leave it casually sitting there next time he visits. He lives about 150 miles away and he and mom come down every couple months. Can't wait to see his reaction when he sees it, he'll be floored for sure......priceless.
