POTENTIAL ODOMETER ROLLBACK
- There are signs of potential odometer rollback here, so verify the mileage with the seller. I know I would.

MILEAGE INCONSISTENCY
- The mileage reported here conflicts with this vehicle's odometer history. Ask a mechanic or the seller to confirm the actual mileage - this entry may just be a clerical error.

Another thing I have been thinking about, based on the carfax, is what if I find the actual car and it is a clapped out turd with 200K miles. Sure, it can be restored at great expense, which I am certainly no stranger to, but there is a psychological barrier a little bit. I remember the car when it was new, and it looked more like the one for sale at Mohr Imports.
So what's better, to buy the "new" one and recreate the feeling, or to have the real mccoy. I guess i won't know until I find it.
Sometimes, you can never go back.....

These cars are metaphors for the exigencies of all our relationships, except that cars are easier to restore than people. I think you should hold out for the original, there's nothing that can't be fixed on a car. My $9.28.

Totally true, but what I am also getting at during this waiting period lull is that the current owner, who has owned it since around 2000, could be more attached to it than I am and has much more moral rights to it than I ever would. It's basically someone else's car, and I am trying to come to terms with that. The guy may love the thing and never want to part with it. My biggest clue here is the long, uninterrupted ownership period which is fairly uncommon nowadays.
Just trying to prepare for the worst, I guess.
I guess what I am saying is I am glad there is another lookalike option out there if I get let down.

^ and I am 100% at peace with that. If I find the car and the guy tells me to pounds sand because he loves it, I am totally cool with that, in fact it is one of the best outcomes I could hope for. At the end of the day I too am a very passionate car collector. Exactly ZERO of the cars I currently own were bought new by me. Somewhere, there is a previous owner(s) of my cars, and if they came to me today looking to buy one of them back, I would probably turn them down, because we car guys are strange people and we form strong bonds with these metal and plastic hulks.
So yeah, hoping first I can get it, second, that it's owned by a car guy who loves it fully.

Edmonton is a small town I'll ask around. my 87 5spd has a blue interior but it is Venetian blue. I bought it in Pittsburgh about 10 years ago. I'll help you find your dads car if I can. Let me know if you need me to look at any cars and I'll ask the guys over at Euasia auto to keep an eye out for your dads car. They are the go to guys for aftermarket Porsche service in Edmonton. They might actually know the car if its still in the city.

^ Thanks so much man! Now you know what my PM was about :-)
So tonight my Dad calls and says he recollects it went to Vancouver; when he traded it in, the owner of the dealership supposedly took the car to auction in BC. That kinda blows my Ontario lead out of the water, but not necessarily.....
Oy vey.

Update: Through the amazing help of several rennlist members: I want to specifically call out Rob Edwards and Adamant1971 as two who heavily contributed....there are others as well, I think I *may* have found my dad's car.
I say *may* because I am not sure it will ever be confirmed, but it is likely. The car was traced down to one that is in Brampton, Ontario, originally from Edmonton where my dad lived at the time. I was given contact info for the owner, a wealthy guy with quite a few cars and ZERO online presence. I got in touch with a relative who would not confirm much about the car other than what I already knew....these people are VERY private. He did state that the owner loved the car, owned it for 17 years, and the personalized license plate on the car even stated that it was his CHILD. Wow.
My inquiry was treated with little interest because of the love the guy has for the car, and I totally get it.
My gut tells me that this *probably* was my dad's car based upon the research I did, but hey, the new owner has owned it an order of magnitude longer than my dad ever did, and he loves the car enough to keep it permanently, so why shouldn't he continue to do so? Who am I to take it away?
So I will let that lead be for now. I'm pretty satisfied that it was the car, of course, leaving contact info in case anyone changed their mind.
Thank all of you guys for your help. Still casually looking, but I'd bet good money that my dad's old car is in Ontario.
Here's to the current owner, a great 928 steward if I ever saw one.
