Default Trip / ODO meters stopped working - advice please.

Hi - I just noticed my trip and ODO meters have stopped working. Speedometer work fine.
Searching the web delivered this; 'If it's not the gear, then it can be the PCB connectors, PCB itself, grounds, connector in the spare tire area or the sensor mounted on the rear diff."
I replaced my battery a short while ago and must admit I don't know when these stopped working - but as I was in the spare wheel well, it can be.
Can someone confirm that this is a valid suggestion ( it did not come from Rennlist ) and does anyone have photos of this connector?
Thanks

Have you confirmed that it is not the odometer gear? That is a very common problem in these cars, for the odo gear to become a dark amber color and crumble.

Odo gear is the first place to start.

I had the same issue and it was initially just the gear had crumbled as others have suggested, which I have posted a pic of below. You can see the little bits of gear everywhere and you need to make sure you get all of that out after swapping in the new gear.

After swapping the gear I still had intermittent issues with the trip meter and odometer not working so I installed the circuit board upgrade from 928Rus, which fixed the odometer and trip meter.

After you replace the ODO gear and while you have it out, the next very common failure is a bad connection to one or more of the brass rivets that hold the connector stakes that connect the PCB to the ODO/Speed housing. There are 4 or 5 of these that need to be reworked. A small jumper wire needs to be carefully soldered to the etch from one side of each rivet to the other side of the rivet and then the rivet and stake. This essentially removes the rivet from the electrical circuit. If you are a purest, you could try to crimp the rivets a little tighter, but you risk cutting the etch or not fixing the problem and hey, who will ever see those jumpers.

If these were bad or disconnected the Speed-O would not work as well as the Trip ODO, you are mixing two issues.
"... connector in the spare tire area or the sensor mounted on the rear diff." .

Thanks - while I like removing the instrument pod as much as the next guy, if there is a possible loose connection somewhere else i'm all for checking that first.
Any photos or diagrams regarding a potential loose point please share.
On a separate note: If there is a convenient plug to disconnect the trip and odo meters it may explain why my car showed low mileage on the clock, the foot well carpets looked quite worn.

My thoughts on this would be; No way there's a "convenient" plug to disconnect the trip and odo meters. That would make it way to easy for the dishonest to keep the miles low. Quite worn carpets yet low miles could just be heavy/not caring/sloppy previous owner.

I'm working through the Odometer gear replacement on my 85 right now. I had the same issues with Odometer and Trip not working but the Speedometer did. Brittle/broken gear with broken pieces all over the place is the problem.

Not understanding why that gear is made of a different kind of plastic, than the other gears in there that still look fine. Any ideas out there?

i get to do mine AGAIN! it recently crapped out for the second time. It was a new gear also. Im hoping the new gear didnt force the failure onto a weaker gear that perhaps isnt made or is not replaceable? I only put on just under 5K a year anyway, no big deal but i trust my odometer over my gas gauge

If you read Dwayne's writeup, he mentions slop in the odo wheel stack creating the potential for binding. He suggests shimming it to eliminate the slop & binding.

When I did mine, there was a "little bit" of slop, an amount I didn't think would matter.

I was wrong, and about 4k miles later, the odo stopped.

Pulled the pod (again), pulled the cluster apart and found that the wheels had bound up. No damage from it being stuck, shimmed it and it's been fine since.

Edit: I'm going to start a new thread for the Speedo PCB
*******************************************************************
I just pulled the speedo out of my '86.6 gold car I was using for DE's, I'm in the process of repairing the heater core and installing a new interior as the car has been rock solid.

After pulling out the speedo I now find the PCB at the back of it has a burnt resistor (note the speedo did not work).
Has anyone here repaired the PCB or should I just source a use Speedo?

Thank you,

Dave K

I'll contact them, thanks! We need someone to 3D print this part out of a better material!
