...lost luggage while flying this week. And why does it relate to the 928?
Somewhere between Florida and Philly is a lonely bag, perhaps is the depths of the airport, probably not on a plane, and hopefully not dumped on the tarmac.
Why does this matter or relate to the 928? Aside from most of the contents being easily replaced, there are a few things which matter. One is my Dad's old messenger bag I used in a meeting this week for good luck, and the other is, and related to the 928, my Frenzy shirt. It's the first thing I thought about when my bag didn't arrive on the carousel.
I haven't had a "late bag" in over 30 years, but they claim they can locate it and bring it to my house. Fingers crossed they do, and the contents safe. In the meantime, I live with a sinking feeling for now, but remain hopeful. Thank you for your care and compassion in this time of difficulty.
Post 9/11, baggage handling and recovery has improved immensely. FAA and HS really don't want bags and passengers separated. So much better tagging is in place, with bags inventoried via scanned tag going on and off the planes. That said, a few times my small-airport folks have missed. In each case the bag was returned intact within 36 hours. Maybe one in fifty trips (not flights...) early on, and none the past five years or so. You will get your bag back.
I have been separated from my baggage a few times usually due to late connections with short transfer times and they invariably turn up 24 hours later.
Reminds me of story my friend told when travelling from London to Saudi Arabia on British Airways. He was flying business class with 3 suitcases travelling to Riyadh. As he checked in at Heathrow he asked them to send one case to Jeddah, one to Riyadh and one to Al Khobar. The check in attendant duly replied "we cannot do that" to whit my friend wryly replied "Well you managed to do it the last time I flew there".
I also expect ou'll be reunited with your bags and contents very shortly.
Since we're getting into fun lost bag stories, I was the last person on the plane about 15 years ago for an LAX-ORD redeye. Naturally, all the overheads were full so I had to gate-check my bag. Well, the old gate-check tag only had the bar code on one side, and since apparently O'Hare had a fully automated luggage system, if the tag was turned to where the barcode wasn't visible the bag would automatically go around to every gate and baggage carousel before getting rejected for manual handling at the end of the line.
I wouldn't have minded if I hadn't forgotten to take my house keys out of the bag after security. The bag was promptly delivered to the hotel that was cheaper than a locksmith that evening.
I got to the gate late about a year ago at DFW. The flight had changed gates 4 times in 2 hours & I was in another terminal eating and missed the last update. Plane had boarded and gate agent refused to let me board. 20 minutes later the plane started to push back from the gate. I told the angry gate agent that my bag was checked and asked who did I need to call because my bag was going and I was not. She had quoted me $900 one way ticket price for the next flight. I told her I was going to drive to Love field and catch a southwest flight before I would ay AA for another flight. She looked very irritated but got on the phone. The plane pulled back short of the gate and about 45 minutes later my bag was on the ground. Wouldn't it have been easier to just let me get on the flight? These days they they do not like to separate the baggage from the passenger. The can but more than likely she would have had to explain it if I had called the 1-800 number before the plane had pushed from the gate.
If you were driving your Shark, this would not of happened. The only reason I ever fly is cause it's fast, and I want the trip over with ASAP!
I drove to Florida, actually, and hate to fly. Not for the bags, just the bus-like feeling, and the turbulence. And I like to come and go on my terms.
Anyways, left the car in Florida and flew home for the weekend. Perhaps I'll get my bag back in-time to depart, but it's closing on 24 hours, and no call/communication.
Understood on enhanced rules and tracking bags, but they didn't seem to know much, other than they will try...
Just got a phone call and needed some papers from the bag. Sigh.
