Agreed. With its back seat, it's a grand touring car, not a true sports, yet it seems/ed every publication lump(ed) the 928 into comparisons with "Sports Cars" of the era.

The primary problem with snow driving in the 'states is salt, not the actual weather. If the state I lived in didn't turn the entire geography around me into a giant salt lick 4 months out of the year, I'd slap some Nokians on and drive year round.

There's an element of ultimate cool pulling up to the ski resort in something like a 911, 928, or a Lotus while everyone else is in their bloated SUV's.

Just make sure you have the correct tires......
Corvette owners are indeed some of the worst when it comes to their cars melting in the weather. It's unexplainable, and an interesting phenomenon. For disclosure, I drive a Corvette daily, and in all kinds of weather. Tires and planing make a difference, and not intentionally putting the car into situations beyond what's realistic for the machine (the F40 in your video clip for example, shows tire cables)

Michelin just came out with a snow tire for Corvette, or at least they call it an All Season tire. I bet they sell 5 sets. Most owners will, as you say, run for home when clouds roll. But snow aside, I would not put a bike rack on my 928, either. Not worth scratching the paint or the chain oil/grease driving on the roof. Or the mud, or... Just not worth it. That's again, why I have an SUV - which is a Porsche, BTW, and not terribly bloated.

Tell the 996 and up guys they are not driving a sports car, always a fun discussion:

I've had a roof rack on almost every car I've ever owned, not once have I experienced any damage.

If you are worried about oil & grease I suggest never driving your car. Road tar, tree sap and bird sh*t will harm your paint. Oil and grease like most petrolium based products do not harm paint. In fact, diesel fuel is a great way to remove road tar, sap, and bird sh*t.

My bike is worth too much to be piled up in the back of a small SUV. When I go to the trails, I see even the people with Suburbans using the trailer hitch mount.....so what'st he point of driving a miniature school bus only to put stuff outside? The answer is, bikes don't fit all that well inside of those either (I have a Denali XL).

You do realize the nickname for the Cayenne is "The Pig"

Understood, but my previous SUV was an Excursion, so those cute little Suburbans were probably needing the hitch mount racks, which I do use one on the Cayenne (although the bike does fit in the back of the "pig" w/ the seats folded.

Also understood on petroleum as a cleaner. We used to use oil in shop class for washing, and still use oil frequently in the machine shop.

Re: 996+ guys, interesting reading, but not going to argue with those guys on what makes up a "sports car"

Well, to be fair, it was the '911 crowd' that gave it that name. Compared to everything Porsche had made before it, it is huge, and heavy, and...

A P!g. (note correct spelling )

But it's fairly small compared to the US "Full sized" SUVs, and almost tiny compared to the "Super Sized" ones (Suburban, Excursion).

Also, I use the roof rack on mine for my bike. Not often, but it's the best way to haul it.

I could use a couple of 92880127102 ...or..whatever groupthink believes an acceptable substitute would be.

Right now for test fitting and show use, this is acceptable.

I have what looks like a genuine roof rack but I was never able to find any information about them or what it's worth. It is very lightweight aluminium construction. Roof luggage rack 928 801 081 02 in PET. Has anyone ever seen one?

Yeah, you definitely need those. I would use some pieces of rubber about 1/16" thick (min) and fold it back into that crease similar to the factory part. Do you have the ones for the rear? Part # 928.801.167.02

I will look around in my junk to see if I have some, I used to just don't remember where they are now.

Here is a pic that may help, sorry I don't have a better one. If you zoom in you can see the factory "Protective rubber".

Cheers,

Dave

That is very cool, never seen one in person before.

I found some NIB way discontinued Yakima Y19 front clips that are for the 928, that have new rubber too, will be good to have extra pieces/etc.
