Default Experience with Barrett Jackson Online Bidding

Has anyone done an online bid on Barrett Jackson Auction?
Interested to know what the experience was.
Looking at a live 928 auction this afternoon in Scottsdale.

Thanks-Hoi

Hoi,
Like RM, Mecum, Russo & Steel, Bonhams, etc, blatant misrepresentation is rampant at Barrett Jackson. It's not really the fault of the action houses, as they all legally position themselves in a similar way: The sellers, not the auction house, represent the condition of the car. The fraud occours across the value spectrum of collector cars all the way to the top tier of vintage Ferrari and the like. I call it fraud because that's part of the language that ends up in court documents when the prices get high enough. Closer to home for most of us, a chiffon 928 with several paint runs down the driver door boldly proclaimed "ORIGINAL PAINT" across the windshield banner at Barrett Jackson Mohegan Sun 2016...and sold way over current value that day. This is not to say that great cars and deals cannot be had at the auctions, hopefully this car is one of them for someone.

Figure out a way to have someone inspect that car..I don't see where/if they indicate a repaint or if the odometer works or ??? Someone from all of RL or Pelican has got to be there.

I cannot speak directly to BJ, but all the auction houses engage in shill bidding. Several have been caught at it, and it's a dirty little secret of the auction game. Not all cars, not all auctions but know that it happens.

ps - I've never seen a 'bargain' go across the block at BJ. Maybe a smaller venue, but not at BJ. Everything I've ever seen has been market price or higher when the fees are added up.

Very interesting. I recall that an auction house is free to shill bid (or the auctioneer simply pretends a higher bid has come in) if the amount is less than the reserve. There are Chasing Classic Cars episodes where Wayne motions to drop a reserve but the auctioneer shakes his head "no", and Wayne explains that this means the highest bid thus far is not a real bid.

Sold for $17,050 (before fees).
<$20k may make it a bargain in my opinion if the paint is good and interior ok. Just love petrol blue

I watched this car go over the block. The hammer price, IIRC, was $15,500, or $17,050 with 10% buyer's premium. Too many unknowns for the price.

According to Hagerty, very close to market price:

Current Values

  • #1 Concours$35,200
  • #2 Excellent$24,200
  • #3 Good$14,000
Consider it's between 2 and 3 condition(based some on the engine bay pics), it is lower mileage which is a plus, but an unloved color(market, not personal pref). A decent price, but bargain is in the eye of the beholder. I would say $14k OTD would have been bargain territory. 5 speed helped it go quick.

not bad. I like the color enough to maybe taken a chance on it.

I agree. It will be flipped soon. I’ll be waiting.
