I always assumed that Mahle and Mann were the same quality, but in the UK the Mahle is twice the price.

Is the Mann as good or not?

I use a synthetic media oil filter in my other car, which has the following spec:

10 µm Efficiency 73%
30 µm Efficiency 100%
Rated Flow 14.27 GPM

Does anything like that exist for the 928 yet?

I get my filters from Roger. He has always sent me a Mann filter, and a new crush ring taped to the box. I believe Mann filters are manufactured by Purolator, to Mann's specifications. I never get close to the recommended change interval, I change my oil at around 6000 miles, and use Mobile one full synthetic 20/50.

When I was a kid, my Grandfather worked for Luberfiner. Luberfiner manufactured their own filters for diesel engines, used in big rigs, locomotives, and filter baths for ships. The filters were made out of unsold comic books, that Luberfiner bought, and recycled, and they made the filter housings also. Still do.My brothers and I always had a steady supply of comic books, wish I'd have saved some of them. Worth a fortune today!

the Red filters are Purolator Micronic. They're expensive. Just buy a Purolator filter and paint it Red, make you're own stencil, for Porsche 928 S4, GT, GTS, Synthetic oil only, etc. Be creative!

Porsche Classic Parts lists them at $11.25 a piece from your local Porsche dealer. Not crazy expensive if you want the filter red with Porsche stenciled on the side.

I've seen them online from $16.95 to $20.95. each. I think I pay $10.00 a piece for the Mann filters. Same filter different color, and different name, but the filter itself is the same. That buck and a quarter adds up. Can't have it interfering with my liquor allowance.

I've cut both Mahle and Mann filters apart (to check for anything in the oil), and found the Mahle's to be substantially more robust. I don't know if that matters in terms of performance, but the Mann filters just seemed a bit flimsy.
