Default Head removal

I have a 91 928 S4. Can I pull the head without pulling the engine?
If I have to pull the engine, can you recommend a link or give any tips before I begin.

One S4 head removal = engine in car
Two S4 heads removal = engine out of car

Why's the head coming out? Which side?

The car belches white smoke on initial start. Then goes away as it warms up. Might just be the cold weather but I doubt it. Just noticed that the coolent was about 2 inches low below the line in the reservoir. Just doing some initial research Incase I have a blown head gasket.
Its been to cold to investigate further. Wish my garage was heated. I hear cylinder 8 is the plug to check first.

pull the plugs and see what plug is cleaner than the rest and might have rust on the electrode tip.

Pull all the spark plugs in order, take a pic and post it, that's an easy start to the workup.

Rent a pressure tester at your local auto parts store.

My 91 developed a ticking sound shortly before I saw white smoke on start up. As for doing the heads in situ, I'd advise against it. It takes a couple of hours to a half day to pull an engine. And the access you gain is immeasurable.

You get the opportunity to replace/renew everything at once. It may sound daunting, but the results are well worth it.

I did this a few times last year. If you have a buddy to help that makes it even easier. I was lucky because Kevin Wilson was willing to help.

+ 1 on what Kevin wrote, also if one Head is going, the other is not too far from doing the same if it is the Head gasket IMO

You should also read about Intake refresh and the list of what to fix while you are in there. Hopefully you do not need to do a head gasket as it is a long slippery slope once you start loosening bolts.

Pulling the engine is an entire magnitude more difficult than just pulling both of the heads, for the average home person.

The vast majority of "engine out" 928 repairs by home guys are out for multiple years......and a huge majority of them end up needing to be removed again to repair the problems created.

Default Plugs - what you opinion

Pulled the plugs and they all look the same. Next step is the leak down test. I hear next week the weather will warm up and I can dedicate more time to it .
