Sunroof Question

I all- I need to fix my sunroof this weekend. The motor and clutch work (even tho I have a backup just in case.)
Here's my problem:
1. Sunroof switch works
2. Motor works in both directions but does not move the roof
3. Sunroof will close with a s crewdriver at the very end but I have pull the sunroof to a point (usually damaging my hands)
Why would the sunroof close via hand but not motor?
Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like the clutch may have broken. It is the black rubber coupling between the motor and transmission. With the motor operating, can you see that the screw on the transmission is turning?

Make sure the transmission screw is tight or the transmission will slip. It’s the screw at the bottom of the photo.

Thanks guys. I'll hit it today. its possible that its the transmission. I will pop it in. Question- If I can turn it closed with a screwdriver does that mean the mechanism on the side rails work?

If you can shut the sunroof with a screwdriver in the transmission then the sunroof rails are fine. However you do need the screw that goes in the hole where you put the screwdriver in to operate the sunroof with the electric motor. That screw presses up against a spring washer that engages the transmission to the power from the electric motor.

That makes total sense....mine is missing! Thank you! Headed out to the house now. Will let you know.

Sunroof project complete. Good news nothing was broken. I just need to clean the tracks and relubricate everything. The two attachments that pull/push the sliders on the side rails had detached so I just reattached them. Guess they came loose. Thanks all. Pretty easy project.

I also rebuilt my sunroof as you did, but still had an issue with the motor pushing the roof up that last 1/4". I ended up pulling the worm gear cables out of both sides and completely removing the old grease. I chucked up one end in a drill and had my daughter spin while I held the cable in a rag soaked in acetone. The old grease turns to a hard like clay and just provides more resistance. I cleaned them both completely and then applied the new grease. It was almost like the sunroof got a turbo upgrade.
