The real lesson is his comment that he just SPENT $5,500 on repairs for the car and it still looks like it does......shows how easy it is for a 928 to suck up thousands of dollars very quickly. Not that there is anything wrong with that but it is reality for many.

Not all that much "under the hood" was replaced. Ad says plugs, air filter (at least it's installed right side up), and fuel lines. But the underhood lines don't look new. So I'm guessing it's the ones from the tank.

No mention of TB/WP, Intake hasn't been off in a long time.
This one will need a complete interior makeover and a complete paint job.
And an A/C rebuild, It almost never needs "just a recharge."

And after that will be worth maybe $10k (maybe).

He "put $5500 into it to get it running", but that doesn't make the car itself worth a whole lot.
Not what he's asking anyway.

I've been following this, but haven't said anything yet.

I have to tell you, those cars in the pics at the beginning are junk. Scrap. Metal value, minus the tow charge.

The only way I'd take any of those cars is if I was paid to haul them off. f

Have you ever rebuilt a car from a "bare shell"? It sounds like you may have, so you have an understanding of the work involved.

Have you ever done much with a 928? It sounds like not.

Anytime you do a "full restoration", the work involved is considerable. However, unless the car was reasonably decent and complete to begin with, the parts cost for all the "little stuff" will kill you.

I seem to recall that to build a new(er) car from parts will cost something like 5x the cost of the car (parts cost alone). When you are dealing with a Porsche, keep in mind that the car cost the equivalent of a small house when new. Parts cost reflects that cost, not what you can buy them for.

There have been a couple folks who did something like you propose.

One is Tony's "Just Peachy." He started with a very low mile car that got "bent" beyond repair. It had an awesome interior, and that was the basis for the project. He got a "roller" and went from there. He ended up putting an LS motor into it, so it isn't a truly exact comparison, but it shows the work and time involved. Link:

Another was Carl's project:

Again, some stuff was changed, but the work involved is insane.

That's about a $1200-2000 car. If it'll run under its own power, and you can test the trans and brakes. I can see easy $7000 in body(rust) and paint - provided you don't want show-room condition paint, and you do a lot of strip and repl yourself. Another $3-4000 in interior work, unless you have the skills and tools to do upholstery on your own. Clutch, possible trans rebuild/refresh, engine top refresh, timing belt, water pump, AC work - add another $3000. You do the maths. Don't worry, this car will still be for sale next year, and the year after, and the year after that.

i had not seen Tony's "Just Peachy" build yet although i have seen Carl's project which is why i got the idea that it was possible in the first place. Just so everyone knows i have been looking at other 928's a bit farther away now and trying to find some decent deals here and there on running projects etc. will keep posted.
