I would eagerly read a engineering treatise on how to set a proper redline for an engine, taking everything into account (including warranty costs). I would love to see curves of maximum RPM of simulated engine cycles versus engine life, for a variety of engines having different failure modes. These sources of True Knowledge must exist in company reports and obscure journals, but I've never seen so much as a reference to them in popular automotive literature. Anyone got links?

My own thinking is that we all have a sense of how long an engine will last before the need for an overhaul is unsurprising, A and B. For example, 100,000 and 200,000 miles. How the engine is operated is a factor, among many. You can drive your car "like you stole it" and accept "A", or with more empathy for the innate violence of thrashing valves, rods and pistons, hoping for "B". Or, as I think most people practice, something in between, giving the engine a bit of exercise at least occasionally. Let's call that "drive it like you own it." Or, for the handy folks on this forum, "drive it like you'll have to fix it yourself."
