Why Would You "shim" a 928 Starter?

While used starters are a complete unknown, at least they fit!
I can't even begin to tell everyone what a pain a simple starter replacement has become....what should be a simple task has turned into a nightmare because of the limited options. I've spent hours and hours on this problem.....Bosch still doesn't have a clue!
The Bosch rebuilt unit doesn't fit....I have no idea of what it was originally made for....but they suck on a 928! The high torque replacements are a complete pain in the a$$ on a pre '85 car.
