Why Would You "shim" a 928 Starter?

That's a whole different story, with shims on both. Your thread is a false alarm. That is likely just a funky rebuilt starter.
Get that Bosch rebuilt and let everyone know how it works out.....I keep hoping Bosch will figure out the problem and they will go back to the original starter....maybe yours will be the one!
Porsche doesn't rebuild their own starters (I'm betting they use Bosch), but they might have old inventory.
I think I'll check into that, myself.

I've only had two rebuilt starter that were bad. One was for an '82 which required the 3rd wire mechanism to do what it's supposed to and the other had a faulty solenoid. Maybe Greg supplier is getting them from some place else than mine.

Not as a big mystery as I thought..........

Got the Bosch starter today. Since my memory doesn't last long, I can't remember where the smaller gauge wire connects to on the starter since there are two screws. I haven't crawled under yet today to see which screw it might fit. Small or large??

Hello Mike,
I am assuming the starter on a later GTS is similar enough to the one on the Red Witch. On mine, the lower, smaller screw terminal is where the yellow solenoid energize wire goes.
OEM solenoid is a little different from yours. Smaller terminal to the left of the lower larger lug is the energize terminal.
Note routing of black heat shrink covered yellow wire.
Black(yellow) wire goes to smaller terminal.

Ha! Tempting. However, I will be at work. Alot. There are 60 hours of triple-time available. I am getting all of them. That will do my 928 and my credit card well.

Photos of the Bosch reman starter compared to OEM. Bosch smaller & lighter. To fit properly, the orientation of the solenoid must be on the opposite side compared to OEM. Any drawback or experiences?

Told you the fun was just beginning!
Wait until you try and get your brittle wiring loom and rock hard starter cable on the opposite side to fit onto the new starter orientation, without the main cables grounding out on anything. You will quickly find out that the starter body is now completely in the way to get the wires to the recessed solenoid, now on the opposite side.
WTF is Bosch thinking? Why didn't anyone at Bosch go try and install one of these new bastard starters on a car?

Replacement or rebuilt parts are supposed to fit just like the original, there is absolutely no reason to accept something that is different.

My advice would be to send that thing back and get a good used starter from Mark at 928 Int'l while the year-end sale is still on (half of $75). These starters last just about forever, used is just fine. And maybe grab a new bracket while you are at it, just in case...

Jim, I may look into that.

Jake, The shop I had test it a third time said the solenoid was bad. He said the solenoid part wasn't available?? I did put an order to International for a used one. I figure for for 1/2 price sale with shipping was $75. Take a chance on that.

While used starters are a complete unknown, at least they fit!
I can't even begin to tell everyone what a pain a simple starter replacement has become....what should be a simple task has turned into a nightmare because of the limited options. I've spent hours and hours on this problem.....Bosch still doesn't have a clue!
The Bosch rebuilt unit doesn't fit....I have no idea of what it was originally made for....but they suck on a 928! The high torque replacements are a complete pain in the a$$ on a pre '85 car.
