Default Does this alternator need rebuilding?

Check out the grooves on the contact ring for the voltage regulator. I was going to change the voltage regulator with a new one while doing the engine harness swap. Other than this the alternator seems to be working fine. It spins smoothly, has no bearing runout, and charges well.

There was some uneven wear on the old regulator

Yes it does,
those slip rings look deep.and your not running a Bosch regulator you should.
I just had one rebuilt,
the man installed a new slip ring as it was cracked and installed new bearings , also put new brushes into the Bosch regulator.

Ironically running a higher voltage regulator likely won't get you any higher voltage when you feel you really need it (e.g. at hot idle) but it will get a you a higher voltage at all other times when you really don't need it. This runs the risk of cooking the battery due to over charging and will also lead to the onset of voltage droop at a higher RPM than before... Probably not what you intended - stick with stock. 14V4 = 14.4V (Stock is 13.8V).

The only way to improve generation at hot idle is with a different alternator pulley ratio, a higher RPM idle, a different alternator or a special regulator with a different temperature compensation. Special regulators with different temp compensation cause more customer warranty returns so they aren't usually offered in the mainstream or by OEM (quality) vendors. They trade off better generation at low RPM for lower reliability for the alternator due to over temperature operation.

Thanks for the guidance. I'll look for a rebuilder. Who did you use?

Greg Brown sells a kills alternator that is a bit smaller than the one you have. If I'm not mistaken it's a new alternator from a 997 with a custom housing so it will bolt on to our cars.

Thanks for the tips vanster. I’m aware of the awesome GB alternator. At $700, It’s a bit rich for my car give all the projects this winter. So I’ll stick with a Bosch rebuild unit.
