Just bought a 84 928 auto have a few questions
Nice car for the price, starts good , overall okay. It's a automatic and when I start the car there's a rattle underneath near the bell housing (sounds like a exhaust rattle) at idle and a vibration (pretty strong) when reveing it up in neutral. I'm new to these cars so I need direction. I saw the flex plate rivet TSB but I'm not sure the 84's have that issue.
Thanks, the car has 120,000 +or- miles. I've searched but couldn't find anything specific.

The torque tube / driveshaft uses bearings to center the long thin shaft. Those bearings do go bad. Starts as a hum ,then a whine, then a rattle and vibration. Rebuilt torque tubes are available 928 international HAS THEM. Also the triangular flex plate at the flywheel sometimes cracks but is still 2/3 rds mounted. In any event you are looking at dropping the torque tube which includes dropping the transaxle which includes dropping the rear suspension cross member.... Which is why some people ignore the hum and the whine or sell the car

Okay pics sent . While revving the engine the driveline seems to vibrate and make clicking noise around the bell housing. The clicking is more pronounced while idling. The car /driveline vibrates more as the rpm's climb all this in neutral
thanks guy's.

One contributing sound can be a hardened rubber access plug in the bell housing area.
They harden, shrink and rattle like the dickens.
Congrats on the car! The 16V 4.7 with the 4 spd auto is a smooth combo, great for long trips, love the big Euro headlights that were added. Oh, If those are cat tracks on the hood, then maybe consider not waxing it.

Only about a million possible things cause vibration. If you can get it up on a lift, and tootle around down there try to narrow it down a bit. The flex plate, torque shaft, and converter in back all spin with the engine running. It could be anywhere from the harmonic balancer all the way back to the TC, plus some stuff in the engine too.

Removed the lower bell housing checked end play result was .006". I found two pin's attached to the flywheel like position sensors. One of the pins is bent and scraping the bell housing as you'll see. Now the vibration I think may be caused buy the front TT bearing It seems pushed to far back in the tube it's 12". Is this to far would this cause vibration. The flex plate was not loaded and seems fine. Front harmonic balancer is fine. I need some input on these problems as I'm a newbe to 928's Is it the incorrect flywheel ? Why are the pin's hitting the housing? ANY AND ALL SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Thanks

Some better quality shots.
don't know what these are for on this engine
notice the notches in the case
flex plate is not loaded
I see oil pan gasket in future. Motor mounts at the same time.
