87 s4 auto odometer gear and surprise
So I am replacing the odometer gear in my 87 automatic and removed the pod and to my surprise I found that the instrument cluster was not connected to the Pod (I must assume that someone thought it would be easier not to). I am feeling that it is probably important for the pod and cluster to be connected, but where am I going to find the missing parts to this?? Any Ideas or suggestions?

For the missing bit: Did you look *in* the pod? In the dash? Once the bolt is out those two 'bushings' like to go walkabout.

Wait... there was a both though that side? Right? Or was the cluster on that side loose?

Hi Dave, I did do a search for the missing parts but to no avail. I was hoping to find them somewhere down in the mix but could not. I will try searching deeper tomorrow but I thought that I would at least find one of the parts. The top corner of the plastic retaining section where the grommet would ride is snapped off which also makes me wonder. If the top and the bottom halves are exactly the same, maybe I could fabricate something. But I don't know if they are. Oh to answer your question, The right side still had the bushings (Upper and lower) and bolt through it. And the cluster on the left side was loose and came out when I lifted and tipped the pod forward.

Sorry Dave, I may have wasted your time. Is the long socket head bolt that connect the pod to the frame on the drivers side the same one that go through the rubber grommet? If so All I would be missing is the grommet. WSM doesn't show that.

There are two of those 'spacers' on each side of the cluster. For each pair, a really long Allen goes through them and screws into the pod on either side. So, you can bolt the cluster to the pod if one of those spacers is missing, but it'll be wobbly. The retainer section of the cluster that's broken in your picture might be broken because that spacer was missing and the bolt was tightened to the point of breaking that section.
