I'm constantly very tempted to start shopping for a 996. I look at them on CL all the time. But I know that the 996 will fill the same niche for me as my Shark: a long-distance GT car.

I only have room for one GT car, and I don't want to give up my Shark.

It won't fill the same niche. Any 996 will outhandle any stock 928 and feel much lighter on its feet. The 928 will still feel like a GT car when put up beside a 996, but you will find yourself driving the 928 less. Ask me how I know....

The Mercedes, is an ugly car, it's way out of proportion. I've had a Mercedes, and would never buy another. Might be just me, but I didn't like the dealer experience, or ownership. The build quality isn't even close to Porsche!

I've always liked those Crossfires, and yes, that boat tail rear end is reminiscent of our sharks.

I disagree - I own a superbly sorted 996GT3, whose only previous owner was no other than Olaf Manthey. When I first bought it I thought it would call time on my GTS 5-spd. On the contrary - it made me realise that one needs both - the 996 and the GT3 in particular are superb platforms, but they ain't no 928.

Thank's for writing that ! It saved me, as I too don't rate that car at all, it's a Monster, for all the wrong reasons ! ( Emperors New Clothes etc)

I'd "chance" an Aston Martin anyday over the MB.

Or, if your are Clarkson, it may remind you of this...

Way too much photoshoppery in that. Judging by the leg-to-torso ration, they stretched her legs by about 8 inches!

That being the case, I have even less need for a 996. I have a Boxster for around town and short trips.
