Default Plastic grill slats (OB)

Question that has popped up on the BAT car that I can't answer. Did any of the 78-86.5 have black plastic grill slats under the front bumper?

All my cars have been metal.

AFAIK the vertical spars are all plastic, the horizontal grill slats are all metal. I don't think the slats were ever plastic.

The originals were metal, but if you buy a new set from Porsche they'll be plastic.

Horizontals - the slats. The verticals are just brackets I think.

Is Porsche the only source? How much does the whole assembly cost?

Default 928 grill slats

The '79 EURO car I have has a plastic grill, same color as the body. Believed to be original.

My 85 Euro had plastic, both horizontal (slats) and vertical (braces). No clue if they were original or not.

Mark sells plastic aftermarket replacements. Not terribly expensive. Maybe $35 or so each piece.

FWIW, on the Red Witch, both the horizontal slats and vertical supports are plastic. I don't know if the assembly was replaced when she was repainted some 20 years ago.

Good to know, the metal horizontals are heavy, and the verticals are notorious for breaking, wonder if the move to plastic was to mitigate that.

I bet it was more in line with cost savings.

The vertical supports are plastic so they can flex 'without breaking' in an accident (since they are attached to the moveable bumper support and the immovable frame). Part of the 5-mph requirement in the old daze.
