Default CV axle dust cap on early shafts

My Drivers side outboard CV boot has cracked open yet again. Forth time I will replace this boot in 8 years. Not sure why that boot fails so much more often than the other three, maybe proximity to the exhaust.

The biggest hassle is the open face on each end with all that exposed grease getting everywhere. I tried plastic wrap but seems that always hangs up on something while trying to maneuver the shaft around the exhaust etc while on my back under the car.

Will the metal dust cap used on inner end of the later car shafts work on early cars? Will they fit if used on both ends? Even using it on one the inboard end would allow less mess on that end while getting the outer end in place and snugged up.
