Default Mystery number under dash

I've stripped the interior of my car (1981 928), and found this number at the base of the windshield, under where the dash mounts. It does not match the VIN. Any ideas what this represents? Thanks.

Boy, if it is, I'd hate to lose my key, not have the number, and have to pay the dealer to retrieve it! But it's safe from prying eyes.

Could be the chassis number. Sometimes these are stamped in "world-wide" WPZZZ format. The chassis get built before being assigned a VIN and they'd stamp a number to track them. I thought these were put on the edge of the engine bay. Maybe it's for the unibody before the engine bay gets welded on.

AFAIK it is totally separate body sequence number which is given to all complete bodies factory makes. Some spare bodies do not have VIN given to them until they are sold as replacement but they do have this number. Once spare is sold original cars VIN is assigned to new body but this number remains same what was given originally. Its a way to keep track of all bodies made vs VINs assigned.

It is said that there is hidden VIN stamped to all bodies to catch VIN forgeries. Possibly there is one somewhere but I suspect this number is actually used for this purpose. Only factory knows what number and what VIN goes together. Cutting fender VIN and moving it to another car can be done but how many know to move both it and this number?

Thanks everyone. It's always an adventure to tear down a car and see what mysteries it holds.
