Default 88 S4 Manual Transmission Valuation Request

Got screwed over big time in a divorce, and will probably need to sell my car to make ends meet and pay resulting additional legal costs.

I know you guys can be brutal when it comes to valuation – but can you give me a feel for what I should ask - I don't want a fire sale, but a price that would move the car quickly if needed. I’ve been too caught up in life over the last couple of years to keep track.

I'll try an post pictures tomorrow

88 S4
Manual Transmission
Guards Red
Black and tan interior
Odometer says 145,000 miles but the gear is broken. I reckon about 165,000 or so.
No rubstrips
Sunroof
Porken Chips
X-Pipe
RMB
18” Turbo Twists with 295s in the back. Tires in good shape
Finishing timing belt and water pump job tomorrow (14 pin connector broke – just ordered a new one from Roger)
New clutch and pressure plate about 7,000 miles ago
New high pressure power steering hose

As an enthusiast (so probably to my detriment) these are most of the things I know of that need attention:

Windshield has a crack right down the middle. Not too noticeable but it’s there
Dash has some cracks
Leather is worn in places
Carpet is old
AC not working (I will try to fix this week)
Paint is thinning in places
A few chips and scratches
Some paint cracking on bumper
Wheels have some curb rash
Engine needs top end refresh
Coolant level sender incorrectly showing low level
Driver side door lock inoperable
Small oil leak from transmission – will try and identify this week
Needs rear cv joint boots replaced

Overall a solid car that just needs some elbow grease!

Thanks

Sorry about your situation. Concentrate on things that are more important now than the car. Best wishes to you in having things settled ASAP.

It's tough to pin a value on a car without seeing it in person, but based on your description I would place a range of $15K - $19K for a quick non-fire sale valuation. The biggest cons being higher TMU mileage, non working AC, and thinning paint. The big pros are it's an S4, manual tranny, no rub strips, and fresh TB/WP.

I'd suggest researching BaT for comparable auction sale prices and then put a "priced to sell" discount on it from there.

Who is the valuation for?

If it's part of a property settlement "discussion", let her set the value. If it's too high, let her have [read force her to take] the car. Like when you were a kid splitting a donut with your brother: you cut, I choose.

This is different from "how much can I expect to get for it in the market?" Note also that, although I love everyone here, we tend to be pretty brutal on car evaluations. Most here already know first-hand what it takes to get a car to their standards and how much they might be worth once there. The sum of those numbers usually isn't very pretty unless your car is already very close to that standard. Plus, most of us already have as much 928-project stuff as we want, so are not ready to spend what you might get in a free-market sale to the next wide-eyed buyer.
