I'm sorry to hear about this possible issue. If you want, shoot me a PM with your order # and I can have one of our specialists look into it to make sure you got the correct part. If you ever have issues like this in the future please do not hesitate to shoot me a PM as I am here to help you.

Taking a moment off from my real job to check on what Pelican offers.

They offer these, plus a real Porsche alternator and the AL115X. The pics show the "correct" alternators have the studs and the AL115X does not. Check it out.

"Shame?" A little strong. Comparing website info to what you'd say on the phone isn't fair. People who may need extra help, or have questions, should seek it.

If they do even more shame on them for letting a customer down by selling the wrong parts. I gave them the benefit of the doubt because they obviously do not know a 928 from a Pelican 8>). No savvy 928 parts seller would sell a AL115X unless he wanted to bodge a stock car. A professional seller would list all the negative issues for fitting an AL115X to a stock 928. I know it does not matter to you but you drive your cars and deal with the issues. Plenty of owners out there that need help with parts.

There statement "this part fits your 1978 Porsche 928" is very lacking in context. Yes it fits but you have to do this, this and this and you can't use that that and that is missing from that statement. I also sell the Porsche alternator - nothing special about Pelican - however no one ever buys it because of the price.

Just attempted installation of my newly re manufactured alternator... externally the same, but the wires are clocked differently on the back, and the holes don't allow the duct to fit on the back. This alternator was listed as a direct replacement for my 78 928... I should be able to use original parts to reinstall...
Lets not forget the original post.

A word of warning for those that run Bosch alternators without a cooling shroud and ducting. This negates the Warranty so be careful. I have sent bad alternators back to be told they were run without cooling (and they were right) and the warranty was declined.

Have the original Marchal alternator at an alternator shop to be rebuilt right now... don't have a high level of confidence after talking to the guy that they can source parts for it, but we'll see. If they can repair it, they offer a 2 year warranty. I'll send the Bosch back to Pelican if they manage to fix it.

78Silver,

Refitting the refurb'd original Marchal is a Good Idea. Besides the duct fitment issue here front and center, the excitation requirements for a Bosch replacement are different (read: greater). For your car, that means swapping to a different resistor on the back of the instrument cluster. Without that, there isn't enough initial current available to "kick off" the alternator on start-up. This is stuff that is usually shared when you call/contact a 928 parts vendor, helping you make a good decision the first time around.

I regularly get advertising blasts from discount auto parts places. Rock Auto and Auto Parts Warehouse probably top the list after I bought some pieces from them for another non-928 car project. Since I looked at their 928 parts selection, the cookie-munching marketing bots remind me regularly that they carry pieces that fit our cars. In this case., "fit" means they will probably bolt on. There are no clues about how well they will actually work or what additions or modifications might be needed to get them to work. Gotta love the personal service our vendors add. And just a phone call or e-mail away.

Note: Pelican is a Rennlist sponsor/vendor. Plenty of folks use them with great success. My suggestion is to call them if you are looking at something that isn't the exact factory or OEM replacement part. As you can see from their quick response here, they are very interested in getting the right parts to you to get you going. Note also that an early action when you do get a part that isn't meeting your expectations is to call or e-mail them. This applies to any of our vendors, not just Pelican.

Having the good vendors we do makes 928 ownership possible for me. When deciding 20 years ago if 928 ownership was a good option, research showed that 928 International was a short drive from where I was living at the time. 928 Specialists was up and coming, and Devek in the bay area rounded out the "big 3" at the time. Mark Anderson & Dave Roberts are still supporting us. Roger has more than capably filled the gap left when Devek departed the scene. Pelican was local to me too until we moved north a few years ago. Thanks to all of them, I can go jump in the car at almost any moment and fearlessly drive to a far corner of the country and back should that need arise. Couldn't do that without them and this group here.
