Default Bad heater core?

I am doing a complete interior restoration on my 1984 and have gone as deep as pulling out the HVAC box that contains the heater core and A/C exchanger to re-foam all of the flaps and replace o-rings. When I pulled the heater core pipes to replace the o-rings I saw a rubber seal that was loose inside the heater core. I pulled on it with a pick to see if it was a small piece that had made it's way in there and broke off a piece.

I want to make sure this isn't a seal for the heater core itself that is coming apart as I would hate to put the entire car back together only to have to replace the heater core. I'd be grateful for any ideas. Thanks!

you got me .............

since heater cores in these cars never seem to have leaking issues,
I would guess that the rubber was left from manufacturing,
or came from another part of the cooling system and got clogged in the core

Yeah it seemed strange to me. I will probably have it pressure tested if I can to ensure that it doesn't leak. I didn't have any issues with it leaking beforehand. Thank you for the insight.

UMM make sure whomever is testing this part doesnt over pressure it and make it leak,
its most likely OK right now
