Default 1st Owner or Not

A brief history of my 91 Horizon Blue S4.

I purchased it from a dentist in Tampa FL in Jan 2011. When trying to register it in NC i came across the following. It was never registered in his name. He had a company that had been closed for several years, and the car was in the companies name. It took several months to get it cleared up but in the end I got a bill of sale from the company not the dentist. He had owned the car for over 15 years. The previous owners were also companies, and not individuals (leasing companies the first few years).

So what is everyone's opinion First Owner or not?

Flippers often play this game by never registering cars purchased from the original owner so they can sell it as a "one owner" car. But those cars are never registered & legally owned under the umbrella of a dealers license.

If it was ever titled to anyone or anything, that is the "first" owner.

Still cool to buy a 928 that is a one owner car for any significant amount of time.

I could clarify it and say that I am the first individual owner of the car.

You are not the first owner. Not even close.

The leasing company was the first owner, then the business you purchased from. Sounds like you are #3, at least.

The owners were the companies. An owner does not have to be an individual. Companies own all sorts of property. People buy cars in the company name all the time for tax and liability limitation reasons. It sounds like this car had many owners.

I am the third owner by all records.

I am the proud owner of her, and she keeps me focused.

Either way, a beautiful car. Randy Carter's Horizon Blue GTS is here in Austin as part of a collection and sure is a treat for the eyes! Rare color 928s are the best!

I had somewhat the same question about my car ... original owner traded it in for an SUV at a GMC dealer in NJ, who then auctioned it to a specialty place in San Luis Obispo, CA. I decided to ignore the car dealer transactions and consider myself the second end-user owner.

Randy's car ...

Randy offered his car to me when he was selling and moving south of the border. I could not afford it at the time. I love that color on the 928's.

Dealer transactions are not considered "ownership", and have a separate place on tiles for moving the car about.

Titling the vehicle, whether in a person, business, or trust name, is different, and constitutes ownership.

I hope this helps.

^This.

It sounds like the dentist first leased it, titling it in the name of a company. Then bought it, titling it in the name of another company.

Depending, if the dentist (or his wife) was the only real user of the car, the OP could be considered the second owner.

My Cayenne, for example was bought by a roofing company. The owner of the company was the sole user. After some years (presumably when the depreciation got far enough along), he bought the car from the company, and titled it in his own name.
So when I bought it, it was a "two owner" car, even though only one person had actually used it.

The car was first titled to a different leasing company. Then the dentist bought it through his company, and never titled it in his name. I then titled it in my name.

so Third Owner.

Not.

My '82 was originally titled to the wine broker owner's corporation as a "company car." After he depreciated it out, he sold it to himself and I bought it from him.

So, technically, I'm the 3rd owner....
