A couple questions on harvesting the S4 harness if I may
Good morning-hope everybody's having a good week.
I have successfully removed the engine harness as well as the FI harness from the S4 donor car, thanks again for the coaching on that.
The main harness that runs to the back of the car as well as to the HVAC and CE panel etc is ready to come out with the exception of the trunk of that the harness that appears to turn into where the fan blower is under the windshield area through the firewall.
I am starting to get pressed for time on harvesting things from the shell and wanted to ask a couple questions if I may;
- how hard is it to get that harness trunk which goes up through the firewall loose and out? It looks like a fair amount of disassembly
- if I don't have the time or stomach to remove that part of the wiring harness trunk how would you recommend harvesting the rest of the harness without that part?
- does anyone know a way of going back in time and giving the Porsche engineers a dope slap to make the main harness to that trunk that goes into the firewall a quick disconnect?
- on the door harness, do most people usually cut the wire that goes to the power mirrors? How about to the power window regulator? I can't seem to get that white clip off from the door harness to that window regulator
- I've seen rear harnessed and dash harnesses offered for sale, but without a way of disconnecting those pieces have they just been cut to separate them? Is that considered an acceptable practice?
Trying to make full use of the shell prior to it going away so it benefits the 928 community...
Thanks!

I think my standards are higher than average. So...
With few exceptions (and I don't remember any right now(*)) I never cut a harness. I won't buy a used harness that's been cut.
Door harness: You can 'de-pin' the connector bodies for the mirrors with the right tools. Worst case, the connector bodies (87-91) can purchased new, so destructive removal of the bodies without compromising the actual wiring is possible.
(*) Exceptions: Swap for GTS mirrors.

The engine and FI harness were nicely connected / disconnected, was hoping the rest would be.

Yes, everything is out. Everything is connected and free except for the darn part of the harness that disappears into the firewall under the dash.
I haven't seen a way to disconnect just the rear part of the harness, don't think there is, is there? No connections hiding under the wrapping/cloth are there?
Thanks for the responses!

Agreed with Worf, the only wire that I will make an exception for is the single wire from the door pin switches. It's nearly impossible to uncrimp from the switch body, so I have given myself a pardon after cutting the wire at the switch. The lead is still long enough to be re-used.
I have the pin extraction tool for the mirror plugs, if you're coming to Sharktoberfest I can loan them to you. Or before, if you're in a hurry.
Dr. Bob's primer on pin extraction is worth its weight in chain tensioner guides.
