Default OB rear bumper cover removal challenges

Doing some long neglected body work and had planned to remove the rear bumper cover but what a PITA!

I soaked the 8mm nuts in each fender well with PB blaster as well as the 19mm bumperette bolts that only need to be loosened.

I got the left side bumperette bolt loose and when I went to do the 8mm nuts one snapped off the stud and the top stud is just spinning when trying to remove the nut.

The Bumperette bolt behind the fuel tank is thoroughly rusted and because of the fuel tank impossible to get enough leverage to break free.

The 8mm nuts on the fuel tank side are a whole other discussion. I broke the stud off of the first one in the middle and the lower two are blocked by the tank as are the upper two, WTH! I am not dropping the damn tank!!

So question is if I continue to move forward and snap off more studs is there a fix should I ever get the bumper cover off?

you could buy used bumper stud brackets they are riveted on/.

at this point it would be wise to drop the tank and use a dremel to cut off the nuts/studs if soaking in PB blaster doesnt loosen the nuts.

I use a small wire brush on the bolts to remove mud and corrosion before trying to remove the nuts

Breaking off these little nuts are no big deal. You can easily take out the strips they are welded on when tbe bumoer is off. Cut the heads off and weld new ones one (I did them in SS).

Community term for "Old Body", the pre-S body style - no spoilers. At least thats the way I use it.

Also known as "old banger" because it doesn't care if it has banged a bit. Some dents are inevitable. Or it could be named after the sound it makes onthe overrun.

It could also mean "Obstinate B!tch", when the door handle hinge breaks, you spend hours fixing it, and then promptly lock yourself out of the car.

I did the same thing, and renewed the whole lot, so I didn't have a snap off when putting it back on. Easy way to ensure you don't have to fart around trying not to destroy the old ones, and makes putting back on easier with new hardware.

If you think you're having fun now, wait till you go after that front bumper cover and those studs/nuts in front of the headlight.

Yes, those little nuts can be a bugger. That is why I lube them once in awhile and hit them with a small wire brush attachment for my drill. But, I found them to be all reachable with a combination of 1/4 inch drive extensions and universal.

Now that you have a couple buggered up, I'd go after them with a dremel.

Don't forget the 2 license plate bolts that hold on the bracket...and the tail lights will only come so far before the harness get stretched tight...possibly causing further damage.

Good luck,

Brian.

Front bumper cover had apparently already been pulled in the past as there were no nuts on either side behind the head light assembly thus the front bumper cover was a breeze on my car.
I have since pulled the head light arms so when it goes back on I will be able to reach them easily.
