Seth,

You should have the engine out in no time given where you are currently at and once out the heads will be off within an hour once you are on the engine stand. There is no reason to believe any major head work will be required but if there is so be it. I would suggest you plan on cleaning the ports up a bit and possibly a light valve seat lap, replace the stem seals and Bob's yer uncle!

Get some good tips on how to install the crank seals and you could have the engine back in the chassis with cams installed etc in a matter of days.

Whatever transpires wishing you all the very best- clearly you have a lot of brothers supporting you!

This concerns me, because I had just about decided to stop screwing around and do a proper intake refresh, and now I'm afraid I might fall down this well lol...

Alright, Public Service Announcement:

I appear to have committed a breach of etiquette faux pas here on Rennlist. I have ruffled some feathers with my linking of a bunch of my posts on the first post in this thread.

So...I want to apologize if that came across as attention seeking. It was not. With the decision to pull the engine to refurbish the heads, I had been asked to combine any of my applicable threads to make it easier to follow the scope of the work. That made sense to me, so I did. If you will notice, in each of those linked threads, I have also linked back to this thread, for continuity.

My intent was to tie all this together. I am sorry if it came across as shallow and whorish.

However, that is it. I am still carrying on as such. If you are offended by this, take my apologies. And read elsewhere.

For someone who's as concerned with descriptive post titles, Randy, it's surprising you're upset as you are about someone linking to where updates to open-ended threads are going to be updated. It makes the data integrity so much stronger for future searchers.

I guess you might be upset that you won't be able to chastise someone for necroposting in 3 or 4 years when they bring up those threads and ask if there were any updates...
Yeah...sorry about that. The idea seemed good in my head...

Hi FredR! I do hope to have the engine pulled in short order and on the stand. With the heads onto the work bench shortly thereafter. However, it will slow down after that. There will be the issue of affording the work on the heads. My machinist and I have set up a schedule of work based upon payments.

As I get the money together for each event, the work will be performed. He trusts me enough to do it all in one hit and I pay him over time. However, I don't like being on the hook like that, and it isn't fair to him.

As well, I am going to take my time cleaning the block, pistons, etc... Same with reassembly. Slow and methodical. From reading the head stud thread last night, proper torquing of the head studs should be done over a two day period.
I can deal with that.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! That is one of the things I like about Rennlist, we are all in this together.

Very good idea, thanks! I still have to decide if I am going back with studs, or converting to bolts.

A little bit of paranoia on my part. What to do with the camshafts while working with the rest of the engine?

Solution: oil them, foam them, wrap them, then stick them in PVC tubes.

3" PVC pipe, cut to length of each camshaft, plus 1". 3" PVC pipe caps. 1" ID foam pipe insulation. Poly bag. Engine oil.

Engine oil has been rubbed on every surface of the camshaft to prevent corrosion while in storage.

The foam pipe insulation is not a perfect fit, but it works. Long pieces protect the noses of the cam lobes. Short piece in the middle protects the teeth on the sprocket.

Oiled and foamed camshaft is placed in the poly bag, then rolled up tight.

Bagged camshafts are safe in their protective tubes.

The tubes have been placed up on a shelf. Out of the way, and out of harms way.

Pfft. Nonsense.

If someone else is worried about the cost of electrons, they can bill me.

Keep on keepin' on. You're doing fine. Haters gonna hate. They would be urinating upwind if you didn't post more.

Roger has a set of head bolts for you, they came back from me, so buy them from him so I get credit!

At the end of this you are going to have one of the finest in the land.

Hello doc,

Funny you mention the head bolts. I JUST finished reading your thread about selling the extra set of head bolts. I had wondered if you ever sold them...

If I find damaged studs, I am probably going to go with head bolts. We shall see.

Thank you for the vote of confidence! I was not necessarily concerned about ruffling feathers, just wanted to set the record on why I did that.

It is what it is, not every one likes me. They don't have to!

I may not have the finest, but I WILL know what has been done to her.

I'm doing a similar thread linking with my threads about my 81. However I am doing each thread 1 at a time and linking them on the original post as I go instead of what you're doing which is linking created threads all at once.

Honestly haters gonna hate, don't let it get to you. You're doing great

Also, you can just blast the cams in WD-40. The WD stands for Water Displacer after all

Seth! Pull the engine and keep us informed on the progress. I had done the same with my 2nd 928 purchase (wow, just 2 years ago with the '78 manual), and I can confirm that WYAIT things will get you! Now, I am putting an euro s cis engine in there and doing ALL THE ENGINE BAY STUFF prior to getting this car going. Best of luck!

how many miles are on this engine Seth? It would be interesting to know what compression each cylinder has if you can.

Ignore the detractors; good luck for an expedient rebuild.

Welcome to the club Seth!!! Anything I can do to help, let me know. It's not as bad as it looks. Just document EVERYTHING so you know where it goes when you put it back together. (Of course you do awesome documentation so that shouldn't be a problem. Good luck with it all.

Smart move. In the end, It will be easier and a better finished product. Pulling the engine is not that difficult in the grand scheme of things.

I liked the links........
