FUNNY FUEL GAUGE.
I am sitting in the girl after taking her for a 15 mile ride on the highway. I know that my fuel tank is full, but the guage is just past half full. I have seen it work properly before and cleaned the sender and connections/installed a new gasket.
Any ideas?

Check to make sure the tank is still in fact full.
Clean the grounds, particularly the one in the spare wheel well, forward and maybe hidden by a plastic cover. Plus the connection where you disconnected the sender. The grounds for the pod are on the firewall forward of and above your toes when sitting in the car.
If that doesn't solve the symptom, you'll want to go take another look at the sender and its float. Remember that there's some tank capacity above the level of the sender cap, so drive some or drain some before you loosen the collar in the sender.

Foil on the back of the instrument cluster will also have an effect on this. Most read at 3/4 full and once a new board is put in, right where it's supposed to be.

I cleaned all of the grounds in the car (including the fuse panel) to bare metal with either an eraser or a dremel and wire brush before reconstruction. The tank read at just above 3/4 on the ride home just now.
