Best solvent for cleaning ISV
I have been reading posts regarding cleaning the ISV (without removal) and it is near unanimous to use WD-40.
Whenever I have cleaned one, out of the car, I have always used something much stronger like carb cleaner or MAF cleaner or even brake cleaner. are those solvents a bad idea?
WD is merely a water displacement vehicle; correct??
also, I understand many have replaced the ISV without intake removal, but I can't seem to find a post. if anyone can provide a link, I would appreciate it. thanks

If someone has replaced the ISV on an '87+ car w/o removing the intake, that person needs to get his own magic show.
The '85/'86 cars you still have to remove part of the intake so might as well do it all properly.
As to the WD-40 trick, I think it's a placebo effect, as in they think something was fixed by doing so but to anyone who's looked at the routing of the hoses, they end up filling the throttle body just under the MAF with WD-40. Not saying it's not possible, but if it worked, another magic trick.

thanks Sean, I can see that taking the ISV out with intake in looks impossible, I get that.
still would like to give a try to clean it out and wondering what the best solvent would be. I am thinking that carb cleaner is the way to go, would that cause any damage?
is it better to shoot solvent into the hose off the 3 way tee on top of the drivers cam cover, or get under the throttle body and spray into the hose at that point?

Stan actually cut one open and took pix. Very informative. Great resource.
