Beer math and fan clutch refill.

I employed beer math when buying silicone oil for topping off my fan clutch. Just as it seems to make perfect sense that if 10 beers are good, 20 beers are better, I purchased a small bottle of 20,000 cst silicone fluid instead of 10,000 cst.

The 20k cst fluid is very viscous and extremely difficult to push through a syringe into the fan. Using it will turn the refill process into a lengthy and tiresome process. It also probably defeats the purpose of having the fan clutch in the first place because it is so thick.

In theory, my fan clutch should now be good for another 30 years, but in the event I do this again I am not going with anything more viscous than 10,000 cst.

I would assume that your fan behavior is now really MUCH different than it should be.

Not sure if this really counts as a fix - you may have gone too far the other way...?

When I put it back together, I will find out and I am hoping that the fluid that was in there will dilute the 20K stuff I put in. As I noted in my post, which is intended as a monument to momentary stupidity and a warning to others, the viscosity is such that the fan clutch may stop being a clutch at all.

Getting closer to taking that Contour fan assembly off my parts shelf and in the car... BTW, since you are the electron wrangler, the resistor pack in my contour fan is shot. I assume the resistor pack is to provide a low and high speed option and if I wire around it, I will get high speed fans only. If I install a PWM fan controller, wouldn't the resistor pack be superfluous?

Yes & Yes - you already figured it out!
