Is there a way to track down which dealership your car was purchased from originally?

I don't know whether the COA program tells you the original selling dealer (?) The dealer is not listed on the build sheets AFAICT.
Does the car have its warranty book? Should be a dealer stamp on page 3 or so.
Later cars also came with a dealer directory (Not sure what year that started) that had a contemporaneous list of dealers. A carfax might tell you when the car was first registered, from which you could extrapolate the nearest dealer (?)

I did a lot of research on my 98 993 and my 79 928. The 993 was easier because everything was computerized. I tracked down all service from literally all over the country. CARFAX helped me get some of the locations as a good place to start. For my 79, the first owner gave me the window sticker copy but no dealer had a record of it in the system due to age. Even the original dealership had no record of the car or the buyer.

I contacted the COA program about some mistakes on my COA, and a few days later someone called me back. She said she was looking at the build sheet for my '78, so I asked if it said where the car was originally delivered. She said, "she couldn't be positive, but..." and gave me a name. Turned out to be a dealer in Montana. That's as close as I've gotten, so I'd say start there.
