Default 87 Fuel sending unit removal issue.

So I pulled the fuel sending unit out of my tank to check/repair and it wouldn't come out smoothly It would come up about 2 inches then stop. So I looked along side with a flashlight and saw that there was a large plastic ring that came up with it but cocked to the side and wouldn't allow the unit to come out. So I stuck a long screwdriver in and held down that side and played around with it till it slid out. Looking down it looks as if the top half had separated from the bottom. My question is, Do the top half and bottom half snap together or is this broken? Hopefully someone else has had experience with this. Thanks in advance.

If I remember correctly, that plastic piece is what centers the sender in the tank. It should be in place in the bottom of the tank.

when I pulled my sender, it stayed in place, and the sender came out easy.

Thanks for your reply, Since I cant get my fat hand in there My question should be...Does the upper half and lower half snap together? If I were to line it back up and push down over the area where the little cut out is, would it snap in?

I have small hands, and can get mine in the tank. Yeah, I believe it'll snap back together. Worth a try. There should be a picture in the service manual on the tank.

Thanks again for the reply, I tried the WSM and the PET but could not find any direction or photos. Hoping to draw on others experience.

I had the same issue in my tank.

It'll snap back, assuming you haven't broken the tabs, but it's an absolute B to get it on. I tried working with my 8 YO's sons arms and 13 YO daughters arms and wasn't able to get it back.

For now, I just left it off after reinstalling the sender, but am planning on tackling it again in the future.

Default Fuel Sender Removal

These may help.

As best I recall, I tried a combination of the metal ruler insert described in one of these threads and I carved up a 2-liter jug to make something resembling a cake decorating funnel. Sorry I can't recall which of those did the job best.

Good luck.

[Edit: Oops. Never mind. Just realized you've already got the sender out.]
