Default New 911 vs S4

Putting them side by side was a bit of an eye opener

It's also clear that the 911 has outgrown its original footprint by more than a fender-flare. When the 928 was introduced, the air-cooled "faithful" (me included...) dismissed it as a bloated barge. Now we see who's wearing the fat-pants. Fast-forward (literally), the latest 911 cars are relatively spacious inside, feel better balanced, and include engineering originally introduced on the 928, like the passive rear steering. They also deliver more naturally-aspirated horsepower per liter, and a slew of active driving aids that make them almost 928-ish in their stability and comfort.

Just look at the printed dimensions. 991 is bigger than a 928. It's not the photo - it's reality.

Which is why the 928 (front engined GT) will never come back. Likely not even a 2 door Panamara.

The 911 is the GT. The Cayman/Boxter is the sports car.

And they have that GT3 "Touring package" now, making it official.

I do not see it at all...

Besides the 'Porsche' lettering on the rear and the black paint, what similarities do you see?

The big hips of the 991 are gorgeous, and the GTS does not come even remotely close to matching their sexiness. The 928 is bland in comparison with its slab-sided, complete lack of hips.

All cars have grown in sizes. Look at a 1970s Honda Civic and a current one. How about an original BMW 3 compared with the 2017 model? The 928 was huge compared with all other European sports cars at the time hence it was a GT. Don't even compare the great 928 to those grossly bloated American coupes of the time.

I am struck by the similarity of the rear window lines... but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find my '78 a timeless beauty... at almost 40 years old. In 20 years it will still be beautiful and the 991 will be a 20 year old car.

Not a huge difference in outer dimensions. But like many modern cars, the 911 design looks huge compared to its predecessors. For most newer cars, I believe that perception is due to the high beltlines, gun-slit windows, and flat/blunt front and rear ends.

Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan too of the 928, a great car.

My S4 is bigger than my 993, and now the tables are turned with the later model 911's, by quite a bit.
