car won't start after cross country transport; need a shop around westport
Can't figure it: drove my car 20 miles to have it picked up in California. When it was delivered to Westport, battery was dead, ok, maybe I have a slow discharge. But I couldn't keep it running when I got it. it would just die when I release the gas pedal, and sometimes when I floored it, it would die. couldn't test drive it because it wouldn't run long enough to get it out of the driveway.
I noticed a lot of carbon on the ground and it sounded like it was running ruff.
in the last few days, it's gotten worse; the car won't turn over at all now, so I have a progressive problem. battery charge is fine. starter turns over, but won't ignite.
could be fuel pump, but it was progressive. I already did the MAP and the O2 sensor a couple years ago.
only thing I've done is add some sea foam in case there was water in the gas tank or bad fuel.
at this point I have to have it towed for repair.
aren't there any 928 shops southwest ct? I only have two ideas right now. I saw a 928 outside a shop in Ridgefield, Kean's auto repair; they appear to do work on foreign and old cars. saw a couple other porsches there and a lot of foreign cars.
Motorsport of Bridgeport was recommended to me by a friend, at least for my 911 turbo, and I saw a couple 911's at the Westport mobil station, but 928's are sort of unique in Porsche world I think. But a motorsport place seems high end and overkill for a 928.
anyone have any experience with Kean's or motorsport of Bridgeport? I've never used a Porsche dealership on either of my porsches and I'm probably not going to start now, especially on a 928.
any ideas of where?
thx

when was the intake refresh done?
Based on your report your battery is dead or running at a reduced charge .
the relays and computer in the car need a solid 12V to operate correctly .
with a low battery this wont happen.
replace the battery with a new one.
also replace the ground strap to the battery.
make sure the defroster **** is turned off CCW for off.
DONT try to jump the car as you can damage the alternator and the engine computers
NOTE lots if running issues with 928s stem from operating with a low battery this will damage the relays since they wont close properly

Given you shipped your car across country and you are seemingly looking to give it to someone to sort it out for you, may I politely suggest you ship it another 100 miles to Stan [Mr Merlin] in Philadelphia and he will sort it out for you given he is one of the best brains in the 928 community -unless of course there is any other of our friends closer to you. Do not confuse a 911 specialist with someone who is 928 competent.
It also helps when posting if you specify what model/yr/transmission you own.

^^+1,000 what Fred says getting your car over to Stan. WIT have Stan perform any other deferred maint thats needed that you don't have the expertise for, i.e.: timing belt, water pump, etc. If you don't already have it, set up a AAA Premium account where they offer 200 miles of (request flat bed) 1x year and 100 miles several x per year. Stan is approx. 150 south of you in Elkins Park, PA.02 T

If Stan is too far, Zen at Angus Imports in South Salem, NY is your guy. Right up High Ridge Road (RT 124)...
He has as an 86S, is scrupulously honest so he won't BS you and does excellent work that he stands behind.
Plus he always has something interesting in the shop like an E-Type or Countach or other exotica

His phone number even has 928 in it (if you squint the right way and do some math, that is... 3+6, 28 ;-0) )

The car was probably jump started as they loaded and unloaded it as the shuffled the load at each load and unload delivery and pickup.often they move cars from truck to truck as they cosolidate loads. They also will leave cars running idling for extended periods of time especiallybif they had to jump it.
Does the car have fuel in it ???

This is not a diss on Stan. Just a good shop almost within walking distance from Westport.
Ok, it's a REALLY long walk but still closer than PA.

this popped up on my related threads list for some reason, i'm sure you got it started by now, but https://www.bela829.com/ recently did some work on my cayenne turbo and i was very satisfied.. he used to work at hairy dog and opened his own place. my co-worker who has a couple 928's recommended him to me. he's in watertown which isn't super close but not a bad drive up rt8....

First, follow Stan's advice and put a new battery in it.
There's a 99 out of 100 chance that the battery is toast. 100% of the time a 928 is flat-bedded to me with a dead battery the battery is toast and won't hold a charge.
IIRC in a deeply-discharged battery the electrolytes form crystals on the plates which, when subject to vibration (i.e. cross-country transport) fall to the bottom of the battery at which point they will never return to suspension in the acid.
So, in my experience a new battery is needed regardless even if that's not the ultimate cause so it's not wasted money.
Last, but not least, has the LH been rebuilt?

For what it's worth, the only time mine failed to start was due to an 8 year old battery, put in a 1k cca agm, cranks the 20w50 in the dead of winter with no problems., never have had a fail to start.
a week battery could actually cause it to flood out.
