Cam box leak. Engine in or out?
Hi all. My 4.7l 16 valve engine has developed a leak front left outer edge where the cam box bolts to the head. I’ve had a brief go at getting a hex drive onto the nearby bolts but it looks pretty problematic.
i also want to do cam belt and water pump, sump gasket, engine mounts and rear cam seals. And central shaft bearings (crank end float is within spec).
i think engine out is the way to go (I have hoist and tools and have had the engine out and back into my S4 ok).
So brains trust - engine in or engine out? (I think I know the answer - out).
Thanks in advance

Make sure its not the distributor leaking. After removing both cam covers I noticed it was coming from Distributer, changed o ring and all good

If it was just a cam tower I would do it engine in. But with all the other stuff you want to do you should definitely pull the engine.
It makes all of those jobs a heck of a lot easier!

If the head gaskets are original I would pull it then do the HGs as well
if you don’t do them you will be doing them as by now they are Swiss cheese so it’s pretty difficult to pull the cam towers and then remove the old gaskets

Pull it and do the work on an engine stand.

I saw an oil leak in the very same place last weekend, going to check the distributor seal first as suggested, but if that’s not the cause was going to try the sealant discussed here as a fix for now: https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...ed-for-me.html
I’ve no other reason to pull the engine at the moment but this might keep the underside dry until I do.
