I have a local engineering guy here that builds race cars looking into whether he can do something with a pressed in steel threaded sleeve then fit a screw in ball joint.

I think I know why the bottom end was rebuilt. I noticed on the oil pan a small dent. I thought to myself lucky that didn't crack. I have now cleaned up the pan and found an epoxy resin repair inside. I'm thinking someone in the past has hit something, cracked the pan and continued to drive losing all the oil. There was no oil stains or evidence of any leaking from the crack though so clearly the repair has worked.
Now I need to decided whether to continue using this pan or just get a good used one.

DeWolf, bite the bullet and source another pan. Yes, that repair is holding. But for how long? Would that not be something to gnaw away at the back of your mind? (Maybe I am just too paranoid. )
Alternatively, look into having that crack TIG'd.
Good Luck!

What's the serial number of the block?

since the pan is out you could have it welded or clean the outside and put some JB weld on it and forget it

I don't even show an M28/45 on my list. Need to update that on the list.
