I have a local engineering guy here that builds race cars looking into whether he can do something with a pressed in steel threaded sleeve then fit a screw in ball joint.

There was no oil stains or evidence of any leaking from the crack though so clearly the repair has worked.
Now I need to decided whether to continue using this pan or just get a good used one.

DeWolf, bite the bullet and source another pan. Yes, that repair is holding. But for how long? Would that not be something to gnaw away at the back of your mind? (Maybe I am just too paranoid. )

Alternatively, look into having that crack TIG'd.

Good Luck!

since the pan is out you could have it welded or clean the outside and put some JB weld on it and forget it

^ I'm thinking that's what I'll do. At least then as Seth says, I won't have to worry about it.

Well, that's correct for a 1986 M298 option (Prepared for unleaded fuel, manual transmission) 4.7 liter, so it's highly likely to be the original block to the car.

I don't even show an M28/45 on my list. Need to update that on the list.

Whoops, you're absolutely right- I made a copy error in my table. Here's the page from the '85-89 Tech Specs book showing it correctly:

Some data sheets show it, and others don't. It's one of those years where US and ROW have significant differences in transition times, from the data I have.

Edit: Quick draw Edwards beat me to it ...
