Fellow shark lovers, tomorrow is a new chapter for my 1987 928 S4. Just a quick refresh for some of you that might not know why I'm doing it. I recently started having issues with the car running good once my car got hot, changed out MAF. Changed out crank sensor and so at the same time I also started to have steering fluid leaks and oil as well from oil pan, plus your typical oil passing under the valve covers. I also have the original paint on the valve covers and intake manifold so gives me a chance to repaint those and along with other metallic items that can be refreshed. Found the wiring harness at the MAF connection torn and my engine harness is brittle with the 14 pin cable torn.
Looking to ordering he whole seal/gasket kit for engine, new engine harness, repainting metallic parts and leaving engine like new.
So tomorrow flushing engine oil and radiator and start removing hoses and cables. I also will maybe replacing most if not all rubber hoses, tubing, spark plug wires and any other plastic that is worn out to aesthetically make the engine look like new.
I've seen a couple of posts online, but was wondering if anyone wants to give me pointers you might have experienced that you didn't see posted or little trick you did to get around something?

Give Roger Tyson a call and he will send you a spreadsheet of recommended items for replacements for engine refresh. Also have the correct lubes and sealants ready so you don't have to stall and wait. Good luck. Hoi
If you are going to pull the engine you should consider taking the opportunity to replace the head gaskets. Be sure to use new head bolts or use a torque wrench that reads both degrees of angle and ft/lbs or Newton Meters.
Thanks for the feedback posted above guys. I've reached out to Roger already about parts and a few more items. As far as the head work who can maybe do he job? I'm new to this so don' have an idea who can be a good source.
I just got my engine lift today and getting it built later today. I will post pictures along the way so I can record the progress.
I happen to have a carport that is a bit small, so wish me luck.
Good luck with your project, I will be following your steps in the fall. If that is the Harbor Freight one ton hoist, you will not have enough reach to remove the engine from the front. I used one to remove/install my engine from the side and it was directly against the fender which I had to protect with cardboard and blankets. The two ton has a longer reach but it may still not be enough to reach from the front. You should take some measurements before you get too far into the process.
Thanks guys, and thanks for the heads up Moose, now that out brought that up. I went outside to measure and sure as ****, its right there and a few inches away from center on the driverside fender. I wonder if it would be worth removing right fender? I think if I do that it will clear it without a problem. Did you manage to do it without removing fender?
I did not remove the fender but protected it as well as the inside of the engine bay. I learned my lesson and already sold it and bought a two ton hoist and load leveler for next time.
It got the job done but it is really about four inches too short and made installing the engine VERY difficult working by myself. If you have your receipt I would call HF and see if they will take it back without disassembling it and upgrading to the two ton.
The ram is right up against the fender and as you lift the engine the arc of the motion reduces the reach even more.
^^^This is what I did also and quite easy lifting the engine from the side with the 2-ton lift. The height was enough for me to position the leveler right over the engine, while the wheels of the lift went "under" the 4-post lift.

Just a quick update, have removed alternator and hood. All lines to oil, trans fluid and steering fluids and have removed radiator and fans. Tomorrow I plan on maybe removing engine out from car. But lets see what progress I make tomorrow. Thanks for the support and lets see what happens tomorrow, I'm off tomorrow as well so should be able to make some progress.
Are you following the WSM on engine removal? Don't forget to remove the bolts on the transmission mounts so you can move the drive-train back about an inch. I also did not pull the fuel injection harness out of the fire wall but just unplugged everything and hung it over the passenger side fender. I found it to be much easier.
Yes, following WSM's. I have a mess since my power steering fluid started leaking and was spread all over. Its so annoying having dirt and grease on my hands and all parts inside engine bay. But making progress.
