Default Alternate rebuilt steering rack

Has anybody tried this? I was shopping for one and was planning on pulling the trigger on the one from 928 MS but stumbled across this. I'm always a little leary of not tried-and-true parts, more so when it comes to steering, but the $200.00 difference is interesting. If it starts to leak, it has a lifetime warranty, so I can just return it.

If nobody has put one on, then I will stick to the original plan.

Most companies don't machine the shaft inside of the rack which can corrode and cause the new seals to fail. That most likely includes autozone.

The one's from 928 International are machined and have a very high reliability rate. I don't know about the one from 928 MS though so I'll remain neutral on that one.

Go with the ones Roger or Mark have rebuilt. Zero issues will be had.

The labor is an issue here. I did my rack twice. I didn't find it an enjoyable experience. I paid for quality from Roger so I didn't have to do it a third time.

Amen! The amount of available fun with changing the rack, along with the tie rods and ends plus the wheel alignment, makes getting a proven unit a worthwhile investment.

The only thing I will buy from AutoZone is motor oil or other name brand fluids. Hard parts? ZERO. Electrical components, Less than zero.

I painstakingly rebuilt a rack on my own and then patted myself on the back for being the smartest guy in the room by only spending coin for the rebuild kit.

A week later, it failed.
Then I bought a rebuilt rack from Roger and have not had an issue since.

As was pointed out above, for me it wouldn't matter a lot if the autozone product is guaranteed, the act of having to pull the rack off each time is just too much time up in smoke...just my two cents.

So much mirth.

I recently got a 928 alternator at AutoZone. It's an incorrect Audi unit (I think) with no attachment for the shroud and just 75A. Ordered it at the neighborhood store and picked it up 2 days later for $75, total. Handed them off the same type unit that I had purchased off-the-shelf 12 years earlier from another FLAPS.

The failed unit would have been fine for another 12 years except I drained some PS (ATF) fluid right into it. Not across it but into it as it was laying under the car. Let off some unpleasant smoke after re-install and it was dead. New brushes didn't bring it back. Those are dead simple on a Bosch unit.

Actually what you did was a reseal .....and what is being sold as kits are RESEAL kits often using generic seals which appear to fit...

I bow to the wisdom of my elders

Ok, I'll bite, what's in the ZF rebuild kit for 700.00 US?

That would seem to make it clear that the rebuilds commonly available do not use the ZF kit, as they are all AFAIK <$700.

I believe the ZF kit includes some hard parts (shaft)
