Default Gas tank frustrations

I have an 89 S4 with an in tank pump. I had to replace the tank due to a crack, I went with a used tank because I need to get this done so I can make it to Monterey next weekend. I have it all apart and the intank pump will not fit through the opening, yes tank is from a car without an intank pump. I didn't think there were two different tanks. Any ideas? I was going to leave the tank in the sun tomorrow to see if that will help. I hate the smell of gas!

The thread size of the tank insert is all the same, but older (pre-89) tanks seem to have sharper internal threads which interfere by a few thousandths. Run some emery cloth (or wet/dry sandpaper) over the insert threads to knock down the sharp edges.

Early cars (78 and some 79) had 36mm inserts and required a 36mm strainer or pump.

Later tanks and pieces were 37mm.

If you got a used tank with 36mm threads, you will have a really tough time finding a pump for it....

thank you, it is just a little to tight and this makes sense. I'll try it tomorrow and hope it works.

The crack on the old tank is at the bottom and there does appear to be old repair work, since the issue is at the bottom of the tank I am too chicken to try and repair. The way my luck goes I'll get my first full tank of gas and the tank will give way dumping 20 gallons of gas on an endangered species nesting area.

Well sanding the threads didn't do the trick. I have a new strainer and that fits so I am going to install that and order an external pump. If I start having fuel issues I guess I'll need to buy a new tank and go from there.
