Nice catch. Wonder where in Pitt it was hiding all these years. Never saw that one before.

If it runs strong, the rest should be considered routine maintainence. You got a good one there, I hate you.
Seriously, best of times with her, the color is awesome and will be more so once you polish her up!

Congrats! 86.5 is the best version (I may be biased).
Someone added those S4 rear wheels, then, right? I thought the '86.5 still came with the 7-inchers(?) all around (I know mine did...just a spacer in back).

Thank you everyone for the thoughts and information. Fired it up today, seems to be idling well, so I shut it down and compiled a 2 page lost of everything I need to get started on it. Bulbs, brakes, screws for the headlights, spare tire (whoops that's missing), still has a lot of the tools, etc.
First order though is to fix the driver's side window and the mirrors. Key safety bits. Then pads, check out the ABS sensor wires, etc.... And the stereo, the Blaupunkt amplifier is there, but what's going on with it is anyone's guess. Time to work on all that....

Quote from OP: 'Cruise control: Odd: Pressing the accel in will cause the car to slowly accel when foot off gas but does not hold speed when released. Hm......"
Looks great Chris and look forward to your progress Just sent my defective cruise control brain out for rebuild and it came back working perfectly. e-mail: JamesDean59@gmail.com aka Kris Rose. 77tony

Congrats. Big $ items are paint and interior. Next are motor mechanical and trans. Sounds like you are good on all that. The issues you have seem to be pretty typical for any 928 that has been sitting for a while. More likely to really strain your time, patience, and sleuthing skills than to require a 2nd mortgage.
On the tail light warnings...I recommend going to NAPA and buying ALL new bulbs for the rear. Clean up the sockets and install new bulb with grease. Under $20 and an hour or so of effort, but you can chase it a long time if you do it one at a time.
On the brake pad warning.... Double check the sensor wires. If they are good, know that there are several connectors the wires go through prior to getting to the pads. Some of them are in places where they can get wet and only protected by rubber boots that decay in time. Corrosion on any one of them can cause the brake pad light. No money involved and no mystery, but some patience required tracking the wires back from the pads and finding all the connectors.
On the running issue....You can drive it for a while and see what happens, but if you don't mind throwing a couple of hundred bucks at it I would start by sending your injectors to Which Hunters to be rebuild. Although I don't know on '85/'86 they might not be as easy to get to as later cars. On the S4 you can also put in new Ford injectors for about the same price but I'm not sure about yours. There may be lots of other intake refresh work to do, but that's where I'd start due to known old fuel history.

Congratulations, love the color, a great find, close enough to an S4 to be a great car. I do have a slightly different vision, first replace ALL the fuel lines if they are not new. Maybe a little expense now, but too many car-b-que's to be comfortable with old fuel lines. I am sure others will agree, do it NOW, not later.
Others will chime in with continued good advice.

Congrats and welcome! An 86.5 is on my list of next 928s I want to add to my stable of one.
If you don't already know, change all the flexible flammable fluid lines, fuel, ps, etc. Too many unfortunate fires because of dry rotted rubber.
As for the horn going off during a turn the simple reason and fix may be the power line that connects to the steering wheel horn pad has become disconnected and is swinging and grounding itself in side the wheel. The horn pad can be pulled off with your hands and then you can see if the wire is loose.
Good luck!

Indeed, the paint is a killer, clearcoat peeling wrecked my 944S, sad. Hopefully this does NOT have clearcoat, but I will wash and wax it this weekend.
Meantime window: I got the window switches out (need to figure out how to get the console up, the screws are somewhere in there) and I can see that soldering them on with a lot o' solder could melt the plastic around the pins. Hm. Does anyone know if red and black are +12 and gnd, not sure if they are to test the motor (if so the others are motor stator + and -, maybe). If so I'll take the switch apart and see what's what in there.
Wonder if I should document all this somehow.
