What is this part above the tranny?
I found this piece broken laying on top of my transmission. It has two tabs that bolt to the socket heads toward the rear of the transmission at the back of the car. It has been rattling since I've owned my car - it might have broken a while ago.
is it a heat shield? I was thinking of welding new tabs and installing but maybe some of you deleted it?

It's the scattershield that attaches over the end cover of the transmission. Yours is junk: the two lugs through which bolts secure it are torn away. I can provide a good, used one if interested. Easy to install, just back out the two allen bolts. Caveat is that I don't know whether you'll have the access with the transmission in the car.

Kevin: Thanks for the information. I didn't know what a scattershield was until I googled it after your reply. I guess it's there to protect the gas tank in an event. It's really a wimpy mount. I guess it works but doesn't seem like it would stop anything. I appreciate the offer for another one, but I'll weld on new tabs if I decide to reinstall. Thanks!

TJ, correct as to protecting the tank, added in 85.5 I believe. When Porsche rolled out the 85.5 changes to the 944 series, there was a neat little set of information that was eventually incorporated into a 944 series transmission tech booklet. It included mention of the addition of the scattershield, albeit with very vague rationale that was either the product of lawyers ("not that there was anything dangerous or wrong with the original transmission, nosiree") or Teutonic waffling. Whatever... It's hard to say just how much safer the shield made things, may be a principal of putting something steel between the turning fifth gearset and the plastic fuel tank. Good luck!
