Thinking of buying a 1987 924s
#17
I have owned my 924S for 20years, and we have many great memories together. They can be great, fun, and reliable cars when maintained properly. Friends were always amazed when I would tell them that I would drive my car to the track for the weekend, drive it on the track all weekend, then drive it home, and to work on Monday.
You need to go into this knowing that you will be spending some money on the car every year for upkeep, and possibly upgrades. The only other suggestion I may have is to find a late 944 (85.5 or later), and take it for a test drive. The interior of those cars were completely redesigned and some people prefer the late cars for this reason.
All this considered...as long as you like the car, enjoy driving it, and your mechanic states that it is in good running order I say make an offer. If you are up in the Chicago area it's a little early to be selling a sports car and the 924S isn't as sought after as other cars so the seller probably doesn't have people banging down his door with offers.
Best of luck....if this car doesn't work out, keep searching there are plenty of cars out there.

I have two 924s' neither of which look as good as what you've posted here. But they are wonderful. A search online or elsewhere can get you the comparison to a 944 that you are no doubt curious about. Wherever you look, I am confident that results will suggest a favourable review of this car. For my money, it is a much better buy just as it was when new. What sells it for me is the absence of the wheel flares which only serves to remind me of the shoulder pad era that was the '80s. Yuck.

If you can do the bulk of the work yourself, I think 4k would be a fair price for both of you, but If I were you I would just do a little math on what you're going to have to pay someone else to do, especially diagnostic work, if the numbers aren't great you may wish to keep looking. I'm autistic and buying and selling cars is one of my "things" and trust me, there are plenty of unbelievable deals out there. Like guys who spend 20k on a restoration of a car worth 10 (you have no idea how many of those are around every day) I guess what I'm trying to say is worst-case-scenario what you will have to pay to get the car the way you want it. and if the number is too high just be sure you really want the car that much before you buy it. Good luck.

Prices have come up, but only showroom, low mileage 924S's are worth more than 4.5k.
I paid 4k for mine a few years ago. And it was lower mileage than yours with a new clutch but no timing belt/water pump done for a decade. But new brakes and tires.

Great looking car.
I notice an old school Military Base Decal on the windshield too.. Guy might be a straight up person.
If it was in he Metro Atlanta Area, it would have sold immediately..
With all the unknowns, I'd say 4K cash, bit a TEST DRIVE will make your decision easier..
Good Luck!

Yeah, the guy is ex military and now FBI. So, you have to give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to being an honest sales person.
My wife is giving me a little bit of reservation on whether we should make the purchase. Keeps saying we should wait until after taxes.
I can only hope it is still there.

I'm finishing up an 88 924S with new clutch and complete belt service. That's about what I'm going to be asking. The 88 has the higher compression pistons and short 5th gear box.

Did you pull the trigger, or still looking? Another option for you...
If you did not buy the car you were looking at 4 months ago, I have its twin...and in far better shape. All of the work mentioned as being needed already done.
You can see the car on craiglist - Columbia, MO by searching Porsche, or:
