Thank you Voith. That sounds reasonable. Thoughts on the pistons?

Depending on the piston. Some have really thick crowns that could be machined from below or top and some edges on the inside that can be removed.

That said I think Mahle now produces 944 variety of powerpak pistons in bigger batches and those are much lighter and gain some 15 hp on turbo by themself. They are probably cheaper now than they were few years ago.

I've machined out 5 grams from what was left of the balance pads on stock pistons, that's about all you get before you start to weaken the pin boss.

On both cast and forged 944 rods, you can reduce the weight A LOT. I am doing this right now on my high compression NA build (with factory forged rods). I don't have a final number, but it will be more than 50 grams per rod.

Mahle bought out Vandervell bearing out of England sometime back..Vandervells used to be the benchmark in HP bearings...I wonder who is going to be buying out Clevite?

Mahle already owns Clevite

How high are you looking to rev? A ton of engineering goes into rod design, they're probably the hardest working part of the engine. The aftermarket ones are expensive partially because of that engineering overhead. Modding rods will probably destroy their strength.

I appreciate the PMs and information from the community knowledge sharing.

Nope, most stressfull thing on the small end of the rod is the change of direction at high rpm on the exhaust stroke. Lighter pistons are a big help there

Noah, Put both of you "loves" together, Stuff a ls7 in that car and be done! You will have the Porsche with a little Vette DNA.
