Threaded cap for front strut inserts?
All:
I am replacing my strut inserts and saw that there is a seal on the thread top cap of the strut (#5 in graphic). On drivers side the seal is completely missing from #5. I checked the PET and it looks like the seal and the cap are one piece.
Does anyone know if that seal is important? The strut insert has a seal so not sure why its there? Maybe to keep moisture out of the insides of the strut housing? I plan on filling 2/3 of the strut with ATF, so moisture isnt a big concern...I dont think....

When I replaced my strut inserts on my 83 I don't recall any seals in the old or new caps or in the hardware bag ether. I don't have any oil leaking from the strut. The new inserts were Sachs .

Thanks for the confirmation guys. Looks like it may have been a piece of an old strut that was left there the last time struts were changed by the PO. sloppy work...

Originally the shock absorber strut tube would of had Oil and the internals inside, hence why the top cap will of had a seal.
Replacement inserts (Koni, Sachs, Boge, etc...) are fully sealed units and need no seal, a new top cap is usually provided by the aftermarket manufacturer with a new insert and hence the cap only has a function to secure the inserts and not seal it.
