Default ID this 924 turbo

Saw this on c-list.

What is it? A 944 with a 924 turbo engine? Ive never seen a regular 924 with 944 rear flares. Can't imagine someone going through the work of welding them on. Vin decodes as a 1980 924 turbo though.

Looks like a 944 turbo bumper.

Best guess, would be a good start for a 924 carrera GT replica.

On a related topic, found this one located in Canada while browsing the ads last night.
No affiliation, just thought it was worth mentioning and this thread (will bring out the right people) seems like a relevant place

Was a somewhat popular mod in the day. *Somewhat* easy way to fool most people into thinking car is ten years newer than it is.

People did similar stuff to pre-74 (A-F series) 911s. By putting G-model, or even 964, bodywork on them they updated the cosmetics of their car by ten or more years to the untrained eye. With a bit more work someone could make their '67 911 look like a '97 993.

Most conversions were done pretty poorly. Some are quite nice.

Indeed it appears someone DID go through the trouble of welding on 944 flares. In my humble opinion they didn't do a great job either.

It has a replica 951 bumper

Is that a 924 NA engine? Im not overly familiar with them but I don't see any turbo bits or the signature turbo charge pipe.

Its a turbo engine, but its missing half the intake
Just like the difference between the 944 NA and turbo, the headlight assembly is different, injection/AFM is located in the other side of the engine compartiment.
And tho not visible on this particular car, the 924 turbo head has the spark plugs near the injectors vs the 924NA that has the spark plugs on the exhaust side.

It was a vibe once to make your car look younger and more agressive. I think the make it more agressive vibe still goes on today...I was/am part of that.
I've put GTS/944 flares on my 924 as well...but i've grown to apreciate and love the elegant yet sporty lines of the 924 more than the 944.

Maybe its an age thing, when you're young you want agresiveness and as much power as possible even tho you cant handle it..but when your mind grows up you lean towards balance, efficiency and a bit of class/elegancy.

'...and a bit of class/elegancy. '

I'm much older now, but still drink cheap beer! However, I agree on the motorsports part, my '89 951 won't see the track, the GT portion of the ride though, is quite fun. Living full time in northern Arizona now, the mountain twisties are outside my door.

Dont get me wrong, a bit of class does not mean you only pop open Moet and Hennessy xo bottles. It means you also drink that stuff besides your usual cheap beer thing.
I've cut down on beer ingestion quite a lot over the last 10 years to be honest...and i only like a couple of cheap beer brands...and one or two of the more pricey ones.

I'm actually typing this post with a glass of Romanian finest Jidvei vsop brandy on my table.

I have stopped even going to racing events as a spectator but enjoy more twisty roads driving my 931.

oh morghen...

you are slipping. A good combination of driving, of spectating live, of on track driving, and 'couch time' viewing distant events on television,

With a good dog to have at your feet and a nimble, virile 20-30 something living your dream with you, will put you at least on this good earth to the good, ripe old age of 100.

No cigars or chewing tobacco tho.

(wink)

I dont own a TV, havent for the past 15 years.
Waching others race is booring to me.
Driving myself is fun, but i prefer cars that are actually cars not race cars...so i do my sprinted drives outside racing events. + i like touring.
I have two lovely dogs that storm around the house and a lovely 30 something...+ i can see my 924 turbos inside the garage from my living room, kitchen, teras and bedroom.
Only bad thing is i have to pay for this until i'm 65

How many longhood owners are kicking themselves for converting their cars? Funny how everyone wants the vintage look now, and some are converting 964s to look like early 911s.

"The first one now will later be last,
For the times, they are a-changin"

.....Or something like that!

I think most of the longhood owners that did those conversions either don't care or have long gotten rid of the car.

I remember years ago a movie company needed a 996 stunt car. Because the 996 was so expensive (new at the time), the company decided to rebody a G-series 911 to look like a 996. Even back then I went "WHY?!?!".

10-15 years ago it wasn't uncommon in PCA club racing to see guys convert their torsion-bar 911s to a 996 body. Every panel got changed. Even then I wondered what kind of weird drugs they were taking.
