Default Odometer runs fast

I've got stock wheels and tires all around. Why does my odo run 6% fast all the time?

Common.

Probably has to do with the sidewall height and not the width of the tire.

Odometer set for the smallest, lightest tire in the owners manual.

Mine has been running over 10% fast (early car) for years, still no idea why.

I'd let it go. Most cars give a high reading to avoid giving a low reading. There's also the issue of changing tires. The speedo works off turn of the rear axle, or front wheel, and the height of the tires is fixed and assumed.

The speedometer/odometers gets the reading off the speed sensor on top of the transaxle. Do you have a 951 and someone before you put in a 944S trans in it?

Stock turbo transmission. Glad to hear my car isn't the only one that does this. It's kind of sad to get billed for miles I don't drive. Makes fuel mileage look better though, haha.

My speedo is also a certain percentage high. I guess this is in correlation with the fast odo?
Thanks for insight everyone.

What is going on in California that you are having to pay per mile?

How much per mile?

Just wondering.

Right, if you correct the speedometer, the odometer will follow suit. Make my calibrator...works like a charm.

My GPS has a speed display in lower left corner. It can get me in some trouble. The dear wife can see the GPS speed but not the speedo speed (and it's fast anyway).

Recently when the GPS read 102, I was informed that was fast enough.

NCporsche, I don't mean that California is tracking my miles. I just meant that I don't like how my odo is indicating more mileage than is accurate.

However, my insurance company does charge me based on what I report as my # of miles driven annually, so there is that...

Thanks for the reply, time to find another insurance company?

You might want to look at Hagerty. The 72 VW Beetle is with them ($128/yr) as an antique and the '86 944 will be moved there in January. It will then be considered a classic. No fixed mileage limits.
