Default freaking turnsignal

so i put in my new vanagon turnsignal stalk, which is nice and new and i love it.

but, i still am not getting any blink - even though the hazard does blink. the horn also doesnt work, not sure if thats related. i replaced the #21 blinker fuse that i just confirmed by pulling it - and the hazards stopped working - but the dang blinkers just light up in the dash (not blinking) and do not cause the outside indicator lights to do anything.

is this the kind of thing you keel over and take to a shop?

I would love to learn some auto electrical, but currently, i know next to nothing. I do enjoy tinkering on cars though, so i would be into futzing with it if i had an idea of what to tinker on.

thanks for reading. would be super stoked to get over this stupid hump

cheers

There is a relay for the horn. Check voltage at the fuse, if not 12volts, check relay. To avoid buying new,e swap relay out with another to see if this fixes problem. Then buy replacement.

thanks for that - will follow up on checking horn relay and A/B with a working horn fuse.

still consterned about the non blinking turn signal, when my hazards do get the desired blinking result. what other ways of checking this out might i have?

What year of 944 are you working on?

This information is generic but I can get specific knowing the model and year, having a complete set of shop manuals.

Check fuse 8, that is by far the most likely problem. The turn signals get powered by a different circuit and do not blink when the car is off, some sort of European parking light feature. I suspect that is why you aren't seeing blinking, in the absence of 'car on' power, the blinkers revert to 'car off' operation.

Test with an Ohm meter, powered test light, examine with eye ***** (it will look visibly burned or melted compared to an intact fuse).

You may also need to clean the connections of the fuse and fuse holder.

Yepper. Or, you can go to a local
auto parts store and get a meter AND a test light. that way you don't have to wait for shipping.. Both are great to have and are easy to use.

My '86 944 has a fuse tester built into the fuse box. The tester is labeled, bottom row center.

Pull the fuse using the puller ( located in fuse box cover) and place in tester. If the green light lights, fuse is good. The tester works with car ignition on or off.

i'm finally gonna have some time today to play with this.

will i need to disconnect the batt to pull the fuse?

alsi - I dont have the tester and light yet - if i go to the generic auto store should i grab those and some kind of tool to pull the fuse, or even a replacement fuse while i am at it, or is it best to get these through a specialized place or something like amazon?

sorry for being so bass ackwards about especially car electrical. something i really want to learn, but am at the beginning of getting into

you can get all you need to check the fuse at autozone , advances, napa , even walmart. you can use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull it or maybe even your fingers if its not stuck in there too bad. as far as using a meter to check a fuse , the meter is a good investment but I don't feel asthough it is necessary to check the fuse , just pull it out and look at it , if the little wire in the center is broken or it looks burned in any way shape or form the fuse is bad. if you get a buss fuse kit a lot of them also come with a fuse tester and a little puller tool as well . best of luck

Disconnect the battery ground before pulling the fuse. You can probably get it out with your fingers, or you can use needle nose pliers. The early cars use bullet fuses that look like this:

The metal strip will look like the picture for a good fuse, if the metal strip is broken in the middle it is bad and must be replaced. Auto stores don't always carry this style of fuse, and if they do they are almost certainly a plastic barrel instead of ceramic. It is really preferable to get the ceramic ones, which can be found on Amazon.
